Old Dominion sees market share gains continue

Less-than-truckload carrier Old Dominion Freight Line announced Tuesday that volumes and yields grew at an accelerated clip during August.

The Thomasville, North Carolina-based carrier saw revenue increase 29.1% year-over-year during the month, following a 36.7% growth rate in July. Tonnage was up 18.6% year-over-year in July and 10.9% in August.

Less-than-truckload provider Yellow Corp. (NASDAQ: YELL), formerly YRC Worldwide, announced Monday tonnage fell 5.5% year-over-year in February following a 2.5% increase in January. Revenue per hundredweight, or yield, was up 6.3% in February, significantly higher than the 1.8% increase in January.  

The Overland Park, Kansas-based carrier’s tonnage reversal was largely due to severe winter storms, which impacted operations at 215 of the company’s 327 freight terminals. A press release said...

Shares of YRC Worldwide sink on weak midquarter report

YRC Worldwide (NASDAQ: YRCW) has provided a brief update on shipping and yield metrics for the first two months of the second quarter of 2020, and the numbers raise concerns.

In a press release, the Overland Park, Kansas-based less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier reported an 18.6% year-over-year tonnage-per-day decline through the first two months of the quarter with revenue per hundredweight, or yield, declining 6.3%.
