‘Abandoned’ exporters scrambling for space prompt more ad hoc charters

Asian exporters “abandoned” by Maersk are scrambling for deals with rival carriers, inspiring a fresh wave of ad hoc charters to North European ports for next month.
The “strategic transformation” of its ocean business, announced by Maersk earlier this year, has resulted in many smaller forwarders and NVOCCs finding that  after 1 January, the carrier will no longer accept their bookings – other than through the Maersk Spot platform.
But, with short-term …

Breakbulk revival as box shipping prices itself out of the market

Container shipping’s capacity crunch has priced some agricultural and chemical commodities out of the market – in favour of breakbulk.
And the de-containerisation trend could spread to other cargo categories, according to Estonia-based freight forwarder CF&S.
The company recently loaded 700 tons of fertilisers, feed, and chemicals from Xingang to Hamburg in big bags on a multipurpose vessel.
“Due to the huge rise in prices for container sea freight from China to Europe, …

‘Opportunist’ charters like DSV’s will help boost embattled MPV market

The acute shortage of open cellular containerships has helped to boost the embattled multipurpose vessel  (MPV) charter market.
Ocean carriers, feeder operators and now major forwarders, looking to mitigate the impact of a dearth of available containerships and a capacity crunch, are in the market to charter “container-friendly” MPVs.
The Loadstar reported yesterday on DSV’s “extraordinary” move to independently charter three MPV vessels of some 19-28,000 dwt, capable of carrying up to …

Carriers eye ‘anything floating’, while boxship charter market looks to MPVs for tonnage

A dearth of containerships for hire on the charter market has potentially brought lucrative opportunities for embattled multipurpose vessel (MPV) owners.
The number of container vessels idled around the world has fallen dramatically, from more than 500 in June to just 92 on 9 November, according to Alphaliner.
Moreover, the majority of these are unavailable for charter, as they are either undergoing scrubber retrofits, are the subject of legal process or, in …

Demand for multipurpose vessels grows as lines lose interest in project cargo

As container lines ‘lose interest’ in oversized cargo, larger-sized breakbulk and heavylift vessels are predicted to see an average 6% rise in their earnings this year, according to Drewry.
Breakbulk shipowners are now not seeing the usual threat to their sector from container carriers looking to top up their ships with project and heavylift cargo.
The danger from “carrier poaching” has receded significantly in past months as the supply of containerships has …

Bleak outlook for MPV sector as demand falls and the box lines move in

Drewry has lowered its growth forecast for the multipurpose vessel (MPV) sector due to reduced demand, a slump in ship scrapping and tougher competition from dry bulk and container shipping lines.
In its latest report, Drewry says the MPV outlook is “bleaker”, and although it still expects annual growth of 2.1%, this is revised from 2.3%.
“The bedrock of MPV demand is the demand for dry cargo, and within that, dry bulk …
