Will natural gas payback beat EV adoption?

The confluence of a new, bigger engine, net-zero carbon emissions from renewable natural gas (RNG) and pressure from shippers for their carriers to operate sustainably add up to a bright picture for natural gas adoption.

But a new study from the North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE) points to a couple of cautions. First is methane leakage from the source of the RNG. Methane escaping into the atmosphere is a huge contributor to planet-warming greenhouse gas.

Second, and most...

Can Karno technology generate a buyer for Hyliion?

Unwinding the powertrain business at Hyliion Holdings was uncomfortable, especially for 175 employees who lost their jobs in November. But the leaned-out startup is making some progress in its pivot to energy distribution through a fuel-agnostic power generator.

Whether the plan is sufficient to generate revenue and perhaps attract a buyer for the once high-flying special purpose acquisition company are the big unknowns.

The Karno generator, which Hyliion purchased from GE in August 2022 for its...

Truck Tech: Daum straight edition

Martin Daum rarely equivocates. The CEO of Daimler Truck sets courses the trucking industry often follows. If you ask him a question, expect a straight answer. We did. And so did he.

When Martin Daum talks …

Martin Daum is one of those people for whom a paraphrase of the famous line from the 1970s TV commercials by investment bank EF Hutton applies. When the CEO of Daimler Truck talks, the global trucking industry listens.

Is a single-oil choice best for mixed-fuel fleets?

Valvoline updates multi-engine oil

Fleet equipment and fuel diversification has led to a more complicated maintenance shop. E-commerce has forced the hands of carriers that, to provide end-to-end customer service, have increasingly turned their Class 8-only fleets into a mix of vehicle weight classes, even down to Class 1 small vans, and that has meant different engine oils.

The fuel mix has added additional complications. Diesel vehicles have traditionally required one type of engine oil, gas vehicles another and natural gas a...

Trial over: California group says natural gas engines have proven their worth

Natural gas powered truck

Near-zero emission (NZE) natural gas trucks have been in operation in California ports for some time, but the vehicles have generally been operating under trial programs. According to the California Natural Gas Vehicle Partnership, that trial period is over – the trucks are ready for primetime.

The partnership announced this week that NZE trucks have proven they can handle the rigors of drayage work and as a result, have upgraded the technology to Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 9 in its...
