Ships and aircraft assigned to Florida Navy installations in the path of Tropical Storm Idalia will start sortieing today in preparation for the storm’s landfall.

Idalia is heading north from the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to turn east and cross over Florida and Georgia in the vicinity of Naval Station Mayport, Fla., and Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Ga., on Tuesday night, according to the National Weather Service.

Navy Evacuates Naval Air Station Key West Housing Due to Hurricane Ian

Navy personnel living in low-lying areas on Naval Air Station Key West were ordered to evacuate Tuesday as Hurricane Ian passed over the Florida isles.

Hurricane Ian, currently a category 4 storm, is nearing landfall near Tampa, Fla., according to USA Today’s live updates. The storm has caused civilian and military evacuations, including four warships sortieing from Naval Station Mayport.
