Running on empty? Hino recalls trucks for inaccurate fuel readings

The U.S. arm of Japan’s Hino Motors Ltd. is recalling 8,025 trucks because a deformed fuel sender float connecting rod sends false readings about how much fuel is in the tank.

Hino reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that 100% of 11 models — 2020-2024 Hino NE7A, NE7B, NE8A, NH9A, NJ7A, NJ7B, NJ8A, NJ8J, NV7A, NV7B and NV8A — manufactured between March 10, 2020, and July 28, 2023, are potentially affected.

Freight market staying ‘lower for longer,’ Cass says

July data from Cass Information Systems showed the freight market is staying “lower for longer” as both shipments and expenditures fell sharply.

Shipments during the month were down 8.9% year over year (y/y) while expenditures were off 24.4%, according to the Monday report. The drop in freight costs also incorporates lower fuel surcharges. Fuel prices were down 27% y/y in the month.

KMTC container ship suffers fire off Malaysia

The 2,778 TEU container ship KMTC Shenzhen experienced a fire off Port Klang in Malaysia on 12 August, according to the UK insurance company WK Webster.

It is reported that at least three fire-fighting tugs were deployed to assist in the fire incident, in conjunction with the local fire brigade, which was brought under control within two hours.

The 2013-built boxship had 18 crew members and 1,189 containers onboard, but no injuries have been reported at the time of writing.

Dana drive shaft recall nicks Daimler Truck and Navistar products

Daimler Truck North America and Navistar are recalling 2,247 trucks and buses with driveshafts that could separate because a Dana Inc. supplier used non-conforming material in manufacturing.

Dana filed the recall July 10, naming Daimler Truck and Navistar as customers reporting that reported one drive shaft separation each. No other customers were named.

A broken driveshaft can separate and cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.
