Loaded and Rolling: Safety officials want brakes on braking mandate

Safety officials want brakes on braking mandate

(Photo: Jim Allen/FreightWaves)

Proposed rulemaking on automatic emergency braking (AEB) introduced in June by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is getting more pushback from a coalition of state law enforcement officials and brake manufacturers that argue more dialogue is needed before moving forward.

To illustrate some of the math that impacts government rulemaking, both the...

Truck Talk: Hydrogen conundrum edition

This week, we look at insuring hydrogen fuel cell trucks, Nikola’s patent infringement case against Tesla — is there still a case to make? — and Volvo Construction Equipment and LEGO: They’re at it again, but this time, it’s the toy inspiring the real vehicle.

A hydrogen conundrum

At critical mass, hydrogen-powered fuel cell trucks promise elimination of greenhouse gas emissions as long as the hydrogen comes from renewable sources like solar or hydropower.

But there is a more pressing issue. How...

Western Star recalls 6,830 trucks for stalling due to faulty wiring harness

Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) is recalling 6,830 Western Star 4700 and 5700 model trucks in the U.S. and Canada that can stall because of a faulty wiring harness. Some of the trucks are being called back for a second time.

A ground harness wiring in affected trucks may be undersized. That could cause a connector to melt, potentially leading to an engine stall and increasing the risk of crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

No crashes or injuries...

Feds fine Daimler Trucks $30M for slow recall reporting

Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) agreed to pay up to $30 million in civil penalties for tardy recall reporting in a two-year consent agreement with federal safety regulators. It is the biggest such fine sought in five years.

DTNA must pay $10 million to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) within 60 days. And it must present a plan to invest $5 million to improve its analysis of safety issues within 90 days. The remaining $15 million is deferred. It could be forgiven if...

Plus releases voluntary safety report describing approach to autonomy

Autonomous trucking technology company Plus (formerly Plus.ai) has filed a safety self-assessment report describing its approach to putting self-driving big rigs on the road even as concerns persist about the usefulness of the voluntary reports in determining the safety of a given autonomous system.

The 34-page document from Plus, released on Thursday, comes a few months before the company’s Level 3 automated driving system starts mass production in China.

Level 3 trucks can make informed...
