Would Navistar be a good autonomous partner for Kodiak Robotics?

“All of the ladies attending the ball are requested to gaze in the faces found on the dance cards. Please then remember and don’t get too close to one special one. He will take your defenses and run.” — Song by David Crosby, Graham Nash and Stephen Stills

Navistar has remained quiet about its plans for autonomous trucking since breaking off a two-and-a-half-year partnership with TuSimple in December.

Privately held Kodiak Robotics is emerging as a leader in the shrinking field of autonomous...

Nikola gets an electric truck order from J.B. Hunt

J.B. Hunt Transport is ordering 13 battery-electric and hydrogen-powered fuel cell trucks from Nikola. The purchase boosts the startup’s prospects in a critical week for the company.

The 10 battery electric trucks help Nikola reduce inventory. The hydrogen-powered fuel cell truck order allows Nikola to grow its order book for the zero-emission trucks.

Company shares (NASDAQ: NKLA) rose about 16% intraday to $2.64 a share. As recently as June 6, shares traded below $1 and Nikola faced the threat...

Buying and selling in autonomous trucking developer Aurora Innovation

In a week that saw the field of viable autonomous trucking developers shrink again — more on Waymo Via waving buh-bye for now below — Aurora Innovation (NASDAQ: AUR) disclosed that  T. Rowe Price Investment Management Inc. purchased $125 million of new stock issued in a $600 million private placement.

Uber Technologies, already a major holder of Aurora shares, added $1 million to its stake in the private placement and 24.66 million shares at $3 each — worth about $74 million — in Aurora’s $220...

TuSimple begins catch-up on financial filings

TuSimple filed the first of four late financial documents this week. It’s easy to see why the autonomous truck software developer gave up freight hauling. It cost more than twice as much as it was seeing in revenue. And the company has just 250 U.S. employees after two rounds of layoffs and a refocus on Asian markets.

While other startups ran afoul of Nasdaq listing rules because their share price fell below $1 for more than 30 consecutive trading days, TuSimple found another way to get put on...

Robert Bosch going all-in on hydrogen technologies

Germany-based automotive supplier Robert Bosch expects to post $5.3 billion in sales by the end of the decade from hydrogen fuel cells, hydrogen internal combustion engines and electrolyzers that make hydrogen.

It is the latest proclamation that hydrogen is emerging as a meaningful alternative to battery-electric vehicles, which lead the transition to zero tailpipe emissions by at least a couple of years, according to industry leaders.

Bosch became the second industry player this week to add...

Nikola still trying to raise share count but proxies may not be needed

Nikola adjourned its annual meeting for a second time because it lacked the votes to double the number of its outstanding shares. But the next try in August comes down to a pen stroke from Delaware Gov. John Carney.

The electric truck maker and hydrogen developer currently needs 50% plus one vote to allow it to raise the number of outstanding shares to 1.6 billion from 800 million. Too few shareholders so far have agreed. But a rule change in the state where Phoenix-based Nikola is incorporated...
