Sunrise Wind passes two new milestones

Yesterday the Sunrise Wind project received its Record of Decision (ROD) from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), crossing a critical milestone in the federal environmental review process. The ROD formally concludes the agency’s National Environmental Policy Act review process and precedes the anticipated approval of Sunrise Wind’s Construction and Operations Plan (COP), expected this summer. Marking a business milestone, developers Ørsted and Eversource reported that they had jointly...

New NYSERDA contracts put two NY offshore wind projects back on track

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul looks to have notched up two more successes in her efforts to get New York State offshore wind back on track. Today she announced that the state has conditionally awarded two offshore wind projects from its fourth offshore wind solicitation: Empire Wind 1, (developed by Equinor) and Sunrise Wind (developed by Ørsted and Eversource).

“I promised to make New York a place for the renewable energy industry to do business, and we are delivering on that promise,” Governor...

Equinor and BP announce a “reset” of Empire Wind 2

Back in November 2023, the New York State Public Service Commission denied petitions submitted by Empire Offshore Wind, Beacon Wind, Sunrise Wind and the Alliance for Clean Energy New York, Inc. (ACENY) that sought to address inflationary pressures impacting project economics through adjustments to Renewable Energy Credit (REC) and Offshore Wind REC (OREC) purchase and sales agreements entered with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).

That was seen as putting...

New York offshore wind: “Back on track”

Earlier this month, the news coming out of New York on offshore wind was causing some dismay. The New York State Public Service Commission denied petitions submitted by Empire Offshore Wind, Beacon Wind, Sunrise Wind and the Alliance for Clean Energy New York, Inc. (ACENY) that sought to address inflationary pressures impacting project economics through adjustments to Renewable Energy Credit (REC) and Offshore Wind REC (OREC) purchase and sales agreements entered with the New York State Energy...

N.Y. Public Service Commission ruling disturbs offshore wind advocates

At the end of the day, electricity generated from offshore wind has to be paid for from consumers’ electricity bills. When those rates aren’t high enough to justify the huge investment required to get an offshore wind farm up and running, developers walk away as underscored by BOEM’s failed Texas offshore wind lease auction and the U.K.’s failed contracts for difference auction. Those were auctions for new wind farms. Now, following a New York State Public Service Commission ruling, some...

The U.S. offshore wind industry is on the verge of starting its first major projects, but needs more coordination among East Coast states and predictability in federal leasing and permitting, advocates stressed Tuesday at the opening of the International Partnering Forum 2019 in New York City.

New York State’s goal of generating 9 gigawatts of offshore wind power by 2030 “has really helped push the U.S. industry to the tipping point,” said Liz Burdock, president and CEO of the Business Network...

New York contracts for offshore wind energy studies

Ocean Tech Services deployed two LiDAR buoys in 2017 for offshore wind energy studies off Martha's Vineyard, Mass. OTS photo.

New York state energy officials announced they have contracts with Ocean Tech Services, Cape May, N.J., and Norway-based DVN GL for multi-year weather and oceanographic studies in offshore wind energy areas.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo this year said he wants to increase New York’s goal for offshore power to 9,000 megawatts by 2035, and the contractors will deploy meteorological and oceanographic (metocean) buoys to further planning by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.
