ConMet acquires maker of tractor-trailer gap-closing TruckWings

Tractor-trailer parts and components maker ConMet has acquired Truck Labs, the inventor of gap-closing TruckWings that create fuel savings through aerodynamics.

Truck Labs, founded in 2014 as XStream, will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Vancouver, Washington-based ConMet. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Becoming part of a major supplier could help Truck Labs move into OEM factories after operating mostly in the aftermarket.

Class 8 truck orders hit year’s peak in September

With 2024 orderboards open, fleets placed the highest number of Class 8 bookings this year in September. But they know they can pull the plug if necessary.

Preliminary Class 8 net orders were 36,800 units, up 67% over August, ACT Research reported. Rival analytics firm FTR Transportation Intelligence pegged orders at 31,200. Both numbers fell far short of the record 53,700 orders in September 2022.

With depressed spot rates and a cooling consumer economy, some of the orders could be a hedge...

April Class 8 truck orders tank but OEMs have ample backlogs

A dearth of Class 8 truck orders in April is more technical than meaningful. Major OEMs express optimism about delivering plenty of new equipment to ease pandemic-related pent-up demand.

Preliminary North America net orders  were 11,600 units, down 27% from a year ago and off 39% compared to March, according to ACT Research. FTR Transportation Intelligence pegged preliminary orders at 12,050 units, down 20% year over year and 37% from March.

Anatomy of a truck order: Sometimes you just turn the page

Month after month, industry analysts report new Class 8 preliminary and net truck orders, snapshots of an industry in which peaks and valleys come about every two years of an economic cycle.

Preliminary orders don’t take into account orders that a fleet, or a manufacturer, might cancel for any number of reasons. Net orders, which follow the first cut by about 15 days, lock down a better read on what happened. The two numbers directionally correlate. Cancellations are a barometer of how customers...

What’s tougher? Finding drivers or trailers?

Finding trailers won't get any easier in 2022

Supply headwinds facing the trucking industry were front and center at an investor conference on Wednesday and Thursday. While executives said driver recruiting and broader supply chain bottlenecks are ever so slightly easing, the procurement of equipment has gotten tougher.

“I would predict at this juncture, in our looking out at the trailer OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) and the tractor OEMs, that it could even be more difficult in 2022 on production and delivery than it was in 2021,”...

‘Right to repair’ proposal touted as major cost saver for truck owners

Voters in Massachusetts will decide in November whether independent after-market dealers should eventually be given access to crucial vehicle telematics data — a change that could drive down the cost of maintaining and repairing heavy-duty trucks.

The “Right to Repair Law” Vehicle Data Access Requirement Initiative, which is on the ballot in Massachusetts for the Nov. 3 elections, requires manufacturers that sell vehicles with telematics systems in the state “to equip them with a standardized...
