COSCO Shakes Up The Shipping Industry With A $5bn Bet

COSCO Group will spend $4.9 billion to expand its fleet in a renewed quest to become the biggest marine transporter on the planet, says an article published on Nikkei Asia.

Carrying capacity

The group will allocate the funds from 2023 through the end of 2025 to bring in 32 container ships, expanding its carrying capacity by roughly 580,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units).

Orient Overseas (International) Limited (OOIL) said it scored the highest first-half revenue in its history but is unsure if it can maintain the record-breaking ways.

Συνεχίζεται η αυξητική ρότα των παραγγελιών containerships και στο δ΄ τρίμηνο του 2021. Σύμφωνα με δημοσίευμα του νοτιοκορεατικού πρακτορείου ειδήσεων Yonhap, το ναυπηγείο Hanjin Heavy Industries εξασφάλισε παραγγελία αξίας περίπου $261,4 εκατ. για την κατασκευή τεσσάρων πλοίων μεταφοράς εμπορευματοκιβωτίων. Τα εν λόγω containerships προγραμματίζεται να παραδοθούν μέχρι τον Νοέμβριο του 2023 στους Ευρωπαίους αγοραστές τους.

OOCL orders seven more ultra-large boxships

COSCO Shipping’s Hong Kong based subsidiary OOCL has ordered a further seven 23,000TEU container ships, following its order for five vessels in March of this year.

The seven-ship order will total US$1.103 billion with each vessel costing approximately US$157.7 million. The vessels are expected to be delivered from the third quarter of 2023 through to the third quarter of 2024.

OOCL Q3 revenue climbs 16.3%

Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) posted a 16.3% increase in revenue — a healthy third-quarter recovery from the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Hong Kong-based container carrier reported total Q3 revenue was $1.91 billion. Revenue on trans-Pacific trade was up 18.4% to $825.3 million and 2.4% on the trans-Atlantic to $151.6 million. 

Total volumes were up 9.5% from Q3 2019, driven in large part by a 22.6% jump on the trans-Atlantic trade to 141,584 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs)....

OOCL proceeds with mega-vessels order despite the pandemic challenges

Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) has announced it will follow its long-term plans and will proceed with its March order of five 23,000TEU container ships, despite the Covid-19 crisis.

The COSCO-owned company said in its half-year results announcement that it remains confident and described its mega order as a “tremendous display of its enduring confidence in container shipping.”
