The UK Department for Transport (DfT) has announced financial support for the UK’s ferry sector, including £17m ($21m) for services between the mainland and Northern Ireland.

P&O Ferries lays off 1,100 staff as its passenger ferries go freight-only

UK transport unions have called on the government to offer financial support for the sector after P&O Ferries temporarily laid off around 1,100 workers last week.
The company said it was closing passenger services between the UK, Ireland and continental Europe and converting them to freight-only.
The staff would be “furloughed” into the government’s pay scheme whereby they will continue to receive 80% of their salary.

P&O Ferries launches new rail line to enhance European network

P&O Ferries has announced the doubling of its rail capacity at Europoort with the launch of a second line into its terminal at the continental hub.

The 650m long track will complement P&O’s existing rail line and means that the integrated ferry and logistics company can handle up to four trains of either 36 trailers or 42 x 45 foot containers a day, comprising eight services to and from locations across Europe.

Operators pledge emergency capacity to relieve post-Brexit shortages

Eight transport operators have signed up to a government procurement network providing emergency capacity for critical goods, including medicines, in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

P&O launches Tilbury-Calais service to beat Dover congestion

Brexit contingency measures continue to build within the UK’s supply chain with P&O announcing a new Tilbury-Calais ferry service.

Uncertainty over Brexit driving shipowners to run down the UK flag

Uncertainty around Brexit may be making its mark, but the loss of vessels this year from the UK Ship Register may also be due to the requirement for vessel operators to comply with EU maritime regulations.
