Projections that the capacity shortage in air cargo could last into next year and beyond are prompting some passenger airlines to spend money removing seats to make room for more boxes of goods.

American Airlines cargo revenue sinks, along with Q2 profit

American Airlines

American Airlines (NASDAQ: AAL) has offered cargo-only flights during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the new line of business didn’t overcome the lost cargo moved on passenger airplanes that were grounded in the second quarter.

The Fort Worth, Texas-based airline on Thursday reported $130 million in cargo revenue for the quarter ended June 30, down 41% from the same quarter last year. Cargo revenue for the first half of the year amounted to $277 million, 37% below 2019.

LATAM lands Brazil’s last COVID-19 emergency air bridge flight

LATAM Airlines cargo airlift

LATAM Airlines Group (NYSE: LTM) said this week it has landed its last flight of a three-month “air bridge” between China and Brazil to transport much needed protective face masks to fight the coronavirus pandemic in the South American country.

The Chilean carrier flew 39 flights from China transporting 240 million N95 surgical masks under contract with Brazil’s Ministry of Infrastructure. The project marked the first time LATAM Group aircraft have operated in China.
