Roaring reefer freight rates freezing out perishables from the shelves

The rise and rise of reefer freight rates means fewer choices on supermarket shelves as some perishable products are priced out of the market.
Furthermore, a lack of available containers is creating “tough times” for many reefer shippers and their import partners, according to a reefer market update by DHL Global Forwarding.
It said: “A lot of places in the world at the moment lack reefer equipment. Additionally, dry container rates keep increasing …

Commodity radar: They’ve got an awful lot of coffee (shortage) in Brazil…

At Premium we sometimes muse that our subscription fee is the equivalent of the price of a cup of coffee per week. But after an extraordinary year in the coffee markets, with prices doubling from $1.24/lb to $2.36 today, that comparison no longer stands.
The spotlights were on Brazil in 2021, where frost and drought damaged the coffee crop. The weather story was as dramatic a narrative as any Brazilian soap opera …

Samskip is pivoting its air freight business to take advantage of greater resilience in the project market and the expertise of its Bremen-based breakbulk arm.

Perishable produce puts more pressure on tight air cargo market

A sheet of strawberry cartons being scanned by a warehouse worker.

The competition for scarce aircraft to transport international cargo is about to get even more intense, especially for exports from the U.S. West coast, as seasonal fruit growers look to squeeze their way onto already crowded aircraft.

Expectations for a strong growing season combined with high fruit demand around the world point to robust exports this year. California cherry harvesting went into full swing earlier this month. After that, stone fruits like peaches and apricots head to market,...

Hopes high for post-Covid resurgence of cruise industry logistics sector

Recently, cruise ships have converged on the Caribbean island of St Vincent, but their passengers are not the customary pleasure-seekers – the vessels were dispatched for the evacuation of locals whose lives are threatened by the eruptions of the La Soufriere volcano.
This was not the restart the cruise lines anticipated, but they are hoping normal business will resume soon.
In the US, the industry has targeted 4 July, reported Maxine Krajniak …

UK environment secretary George Eustice has been accused of misleading a parliamentary select committee last week, when he claimed the EU had changed regulations surrounding shellfish exports.
In a letter to businesses on 10 December, seen by The Loadstar, Mr Eustice confirmed that exports of live bivalve molluscs (LBMs), including clams, oysters, cockles, mussels and scallops, would be prohibited from some UK waters post-Brexit.

UK seafood exporters need same grace period as importers to avoid ‘disaster’

Seafood Scotland is demanding UK exporters receive the same grace period for frictionless trade with Europe as their importing counterparts, following a “collapse” in trade.
Office of National Statistics (ONS) figures released on Friday pointed to an 83% drop in fish and shellfish exports out of Scotland in January.
This led the CEO of Seafood Scotland, Donna Fordyce, to warn that UK exporters were being “choked” by post-Brexit regulations.
“We are baffled by …
