Refit gives Boston Pilots’ launch a new 20-year lease on life

Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation, has delivered the first of two Boston Pilots‘ Chesapeake-class pilot boats that have been undergoing a comprehensive refit, at its Somerset, Mass, shipyard.

“The vessels are well used and well maintained. Only minor structural repairs were necessary so definitely worthy of refitting,” said Peter Duclos, the shipyard’s co-president.

Alabama Pilots take delivery of new Gladding-Hearn launch

The Alabama Pilot, Inc. in Mobile, Ala., has taken delivery of its second Chesapeake Class high-speed pilot boat from Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation. Delivery of its first Chesapeake launch, Dixey, was in 2017.

Savannah Pilots take delivery of new pilot boat

In early March 2022, Snow & Company of Seattle, Wash., handed off Savannah, the first of two new 64-foot aluminum pilot boats to the Savannah Pilots Association.

Virginia Pilots order 10th Gladding-Hearn pilot boat launch

The Virginia Pilot Association has ordered a high-speed, harbor pilot boat from Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation.

MSC vessel sinks pilot boat at Gioia Tauro

According to Maritime Bulletin, MSC container vessel had an accident at the port of Gioia Tauro on January 18. The boxship struck pilot boat, while moving in the harbor. The pilot boat sank after the collision with MSC container ship, but the reflections of the port were quick enough, as a crane recovered the boat immediately and placed it on pier.

Metal Shark brings pilot boat and patrol boat to IWBS

Metal Shark has two of its boats on display at this year’s International WorkBoat Show, the 45′ Defiant pilot boat Jet 2 and a 26′ Relentless patrol boat.

The shipyard delivered the Jet 2 and its sistership Jet 1 to New Orleans-based Belle Chasse Marine Transportation LLC (BCMT). Virginia pilots orders a new pilot boat from Gladding-Hearn

The Virginia Pilot Association awarded a contracted to Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding to build a Chesapeake-class pilot boat. It will be ninth pilot boat built for the Virginia pilots by the Somerset, Mass., shipyard since 1983.

Since the Chesapeake-class pilot boat was introduced by Gladding-Hearn in 2003, 19 have been delivered to 11 pilot associations throughout the U.S.
