Fury among Australian transport operators at Patrick’s new long-vehicle fee

Transport operators in Australia have warned of a coming “bloodbath” over spiralling fees levied by the country’s stevedores.
In addition to rapidly escalating terminal access fees, previously known as infrastructure surcharges, a newly created “long-vehicle fee” by Patrick Terminals has been slammed as “a tax on productivity”.
Introduced at Patrick’s Sydney and Brisbane terminals this month, the A$50 (US$38.80) levy applies to entry by HGVs over 26 metres in length.

Australian stevedores getting richer, but customers seeing poorer service

Controversial terminal access charges have again helped Australia’s stevedores to increase revenue and profit margins, despite the largest volume drop in a decade.
The country’s four major terminal operators handled 7.57m teu during the financial year ending 30 June, down 4%, according to the Container stevedoring monitoring report 2019-20, published today by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).
However, the report found industry revenue increased 2.8%, to A$1.42bn...

Fury at Australian ports as terminal operators impose sudden access fee hikes

Stevedores in Australia have implemented “staggering” increases to terminal access charges and road and rail operators are lobbying for their cancellation.
On Monday, Hutchison Ports increased the charge on all containers delivered to and from its Brisbane facility by 90% to A$94.78 (US$68).
And, from Saturday, ICTSI’s Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT) in Melbourne will impose a 7% increase to A$131.03 per container, still the most expensive national charge.
The move by Hutchison...

Shipper relief as Australia’s plan for biosecurity levy is scrapped

Australian shippers breathed a sigh of relief today with the scrapping of the controversial plan for a biosecurity import levy.
The department of agriculture said the move followed industry consultation which suggested the levy “could not be implemented without significant regulatory impacts on industry and proposed levy payers.”
It added: “This decision has also been made in consideration of the ongoing impacts of drought, bushfires and Covid-19 on the Australian economy, and …

Sometimes referred to as port infrastructure surcharges, DPW has announced increases at its Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney terminals, bringing them in line with those set by rival Patrick Terminals this month.

Australian truckers furious at more ‘unregulated’ port surcharge hikes

Truckers in Australia have lashed out over the latest round of controversial “port infrastructure” surcharges imposed by stevedores.
According to Peter Anderson, chief executive of the Victorian Transport Association (VTA), landside logistics operators are reeling from “huge” increases in surcharges they must pay to deliver and pick up laden containers.
“The VTA remains concerned at what are essentially ongoing and unregulated increases by stevedores, making it difficult for operators to budget...
