New container terminal opens in Africa’s port of Abidjan

Port of Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire has now a second box terminal which will increase the total container handling capacity of the port from 1 million TEUs to 2.5 million TEUs per year.

Additionally, the African port will be now able to receive vessels of 16 metres of draft capable of carrying up to 14,000 TEUs against 3,500 TEUs currently.

The construction of the new terminal, TC2, lasted 18 months and required an overall investment of 596 billion CFA francs (around US$950 million).

First test port call at new container terminal in Abidjan has been completed

Between 12 and 14 October 2022, Côte d’Ivoire Terminal, holder of the concession for the new box terminal at the Port of Abidjan, successfully completed its first test port call by hosting the 1,879 TEU container vessel MSC Floriana.

The exercise lasted 50 hours and during this time the unloading and loading operations on the ship using the STS gantries, and of the handling of the containers at the yard with RTG cranes and Gaussin electric tractors were evaluated.

Côte d’Ivoire Terminal receives six fleet gantries

Côte d’Ivoire Terminal, owned by APM Terminals and Bolloré Ports, took delivery of six fleet gantries for the second container terminal currently under construction at the Port of Abidjan.

Gaussin provides Bolloré Ports CIT with new equipment

The French technology company Gaussin has started the delivery of 36 APM 75T Hot Environment (HE) electric tractors, 24 Powerpacks LMP and six charging stations to equip Bolloré Ports’ Côte d’Ivoire Terminal (CIT) in the Port of Abidjan.

This order, which represents a turnover of US$10.8 million and is scheduled for full delivery in the first half of the current year, is the largest since the launch of the APM 75T HE, a 100% electric tractor designed to transport containers in ports.

Ivory coast dockers suspend strike in favour of negotiations

Striking Ivory Coast dockers in the country’s two major ports of Abidjan and San Pedro have suspended industrial action after the government agreed to negotiate a settlement to the dispute.
