Port of Savannah building overpass to divert trucks out of neighborhoods

Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) announced plans to construct a $29 million highway overpass linking the Port of Savannah’s Ocean Terminal with U.S. Route 17.

Officials said the aim of the overpass is to keep tractor-trailer traffic away from local communities. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2026.

Georgia Ports near 5 million TEUs in 2023

Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) reported a 4% decrease in its December box volumes handling 422,300 TEUs and a 16% decline in its 2023 container throughput with 4.9 million TEUs.

The Port of Savannah handled 449,000 TEUs in October, making it the port’s fourth busiest month ever and achieving a 5% increase over the same month in 2019, the most recent year not affected by the pandemic.
