Northwest Seaport Alliance unveils plans to eliminate maritime emissions

The Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) has adopted its plan to implement the Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategy, following those recently adopted by the Ports of Seattle and Tacoma, enabling each port to focus on actions that help achieve their collective zero-emission vision.

Ports and operators on the US west coast are torn between using ‘a carrot and a stick’ to unclog congested cargo terminals.
The San Pedro port complex keeps postponing a charge for long-dwelling containers, but other terminal operators have brought in a fee, or are trying to incentivise truckers to retrieve boxes faster from the docks.

Seattle port operator tackles congestion with new container storage fee

Port cranes extend sideways across a vessel full of containers.

SSA Marine has notified importers at its Seattle port facilities that it will introduce an additional storage charge on Wednesday for containers lingering longer than five days in an effort to clear space so stevedores can better service vessels and reduce cargo delays.

The cargo-handling company said it will temporarily levy a $50-per-day fee on containers dwelling longer than five days after they are made available for pickup at terminals 5, 18 and 30 in the Port of Seattle. The late pickup...

What can Feds do to aid 24/7 supply chains?

In his speech on Wednesday announcing commitments made by the Port of Los Angeles and its major retailer customers to expand to 24/7 operations, President Biden emphasized that in order for the changes to work, terminal operators, railroads, trucking companies, container lines and other retailers had to coordinate.

And if players in the supply chain are unable or unwilling to cooperate, “we’re going to call them out and ask them to act,” Biden said, “because our goal is not only to get through...
