Ningbo closing in on Singapore as world’s second largest container port

Singapore is now facing the possibility of being overtaken by China’s Ningbo-Zhoushan port as the world’s second-busiest container port, 12 years after losing its crown as the world’s busiest box port to Shanghai.

Alphaliner’s latest report on 21 September noted that Ningbo-Zhoushan handled 17.54 million TEU in the first half of 2022, just 1.08 million TEU less than Singapore, as the three-month lockdown of Shanghai caused substantial diversion of Transpacific cargoes to Ningbo-Zhoushan.

Singapore once again top shipping centre in the world

Singapore topped the Xinhua-Baltic International Shipping Center Development Report for another year.

In fact, this is the ninth year in a row that the report – jointly published by China’s state news agency Xinhua and global maritime data provider Baltic Exchange – has ranked Singapore as the top shipping hub.

More specifically, Singapore scored 94.88/100, while the second one on the list, London, achieved a score of 83.04/100. The third place was taken by Shanghai with 82.79/100.

One step closer to ammonia supply chain for bunkering in Singapore

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (K Line) and Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) are the new members of the consortium, consisting of A.P. Moller – Maersk A/S, Fleet Management Limited, Keppel Offshore & Marine, Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping, Sumitomo Corporation and the American Bureau of Shipping (“ABS”), which aims to the acceleration of the use of ammonia in Singapore.
