Refrigerated trailers California’s next emissions target; Ndustrial gets ready

HOUSTON — While the focus in California regulations might be on the Clean Fleets rule that will start to kick in at the end of the year, a smaller part of the state’s overall emissions regulations of trucking is spurring some new entrepreneurial activity.

What is driving an Ndustrial initiative launched in the past year is a set of new rules regarding trailer refrigeration units (TRUs), according to Jason Massey, the company’s founder and CEO,  who spoke about Ndustrial’s “value proposition” at...

Thermo King looks to refrigerant to tackle carbon emissions

Trane Technologies is switching to lower-emissions refrigerant.

Starting this month, Thermo King’s refrigerated trucking units will come standard with R452A refrigerant, which reportedly has a 50% lower carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) impact than the previously used R404A refrigerant.

As companies strive to reduce transportation-related emissions, refrigerant is one avenue trucking companies could start exploring more.

The lower carbon impacts of the R452A refrigerant are equivalent to saving approximately 650,000 metric tons of CO2e annually, or taking...

Food service providers struggle to keep up with reopening of America

As the summer months are heating up, so too are Americans’ appetites for dining out, going to the ballpark and attending multiday music festivals — activities almost unimaginable a year ago.

Recent findings from a Morning Consult survey concluded that 66% of Americans would feel safe dining out at restaurants, compared to last year, when that figure never rose above 42%.

Entering July, most mask mandates and other COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted, much to the relief of restaurants and other...

Demand for reefer monitoring spikes after COVID-19

Red reefer truck on highway under blue sky

The COVID-19 pandemic put exorbitant pressure on supply chains – only to expose their vulnerabilities. However, these vulnerabilities aren’t new, especially around food safety and refrigeration.

The meat processing plants that shut down, the produce that spoiled waiting for a truck and the dairy farmers who dumped good milk were events spurred by the coronavirus, but they shine light on the 1.3 billion tons of food that is lost or wasted each year.

Produce season may be slowing out West, as...

Wabash National and eNow release solar-powered reefer

Wabash National zero-emissions trailer

Wabash National (NYSE: WNC) and solar power supplier eNow are harnessing the sun to power a road-ready all-electric Carrier Transicold refrigerated trailer. It could save 50% over a diesel-powered unit.

The zero-emission trailer debuted at the American Trucking Associations’ (ATA) Technology and Maintenance Council (TMC) meeting in February. Reefers are designed to keep perishable goods cool during transport.

Solar-powered refers are not new. But their adoption is slow. Until recently,...
