Piracy and armed robbery in Asian waters set to surpass last year’s figures

The numbers for piracy and armed robbery in Asian waters for 2023 are already on par with the figures for the whole of last year.

By the first week of October this year, some 83 incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships in Asia occurred compared to 84 in the entire last year, data available with the information sharing centre of the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP) shows.

Asian waters see 32% rise in incidents in 2023 so far

The number of piracy and armed robbery against ships in Asian waters increased by 32% until August this year compared to same period last year, data reported to a regional centre shows.

Until August 2023 some 78 incidents were reported to the information sharing centre of the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP).

On the other hand, during the January – August period last year some 59 incidents were reported.

Ship robbery in Mongla port – ReCAAP concerned over piracy in Singapore Strait

Bangladesh Coast Guard has recovered a huge volume of goods looted from a Liberian flag carrier vessel at Mongla port on 24 November.

A group of pirates on Tuesday (22 November) night boarded the ship namely AS Elenia which was anchored at the outer bar of the Mongla port. The robbers took away huge volumes of paints, machinery, ropes, gas cylinders, etc from the ship in two small boats by breaking the locker room.

Maersk, CMA CGM, ONE and Wan Hai vessels robbed in Manila

Container ships, operated by CMA CGM and Ocean Network Express (ONE) were robbed or burglarised while at anchorage in Manila in the first two weeks of August.

The crew members were threatened with knives and guns, and the robbers made off with items from the ships.
