Warehouse workers weigh in on automation in the workplace

Breaking down Harvard Business Review's research, which asked warehouse workers and supervisors how they feel about automation

Automation is here to stay, whether warehouse workers like it or not. As of 2019, the market for warehouse automation –– devices that can pick, sort and simplify other tasks for human workers –– was worth around $15 billion, and that could double by 2026.

Conventional wisdom holds that a new wave of robots will render the U.S.’s 1.5 million warehouse and storage employees obsolete, tipping the scales in favor of employers who could theoretically replace their workers with a snap of their fingers.

Saving the planet and protecting bottom lines go hand in hand

Moving into 2022, sustainability is top of mind for consumers and logistics companies alike. Logistics has historically been a high carbon intensity industry, as transportation of all kinds accounts for approximately 29% of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions in 2019, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. That makes transportation the largest single contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.

With natural disasters on the rise and climate change dominating the news cycle, the public is...

Coral Reef Restorations Can Be Optimized To Reduce Flood Risk: Study

coral reefs benefits

A new study by the open-access publisher Frontiers sets out guidelines to maximize the benefits of reef restoration, not only for the coral ecosystem but also to protect local communities from coastal flooding. Researchers simulated waves travelling over different reef profiles at various stages of restoration and found that to reduce the risk of flooding, the upper fore reef and middle reef flat, typically characterized by physically-robust coral species, should be targeted for restoration.
