More than 25% of trucks leaving the UK for EU are empty as exports dive

More than a quarter of the trucks crossing into the EU from the UK are travelling empty, as Brexit eats into UK export figures.
Data from the Road Haulage Association (RHA) shows empty lorries leaving the UK accounted for 26% of all truck movements into the EU, with total loaded haulage exports down 47% last month, compared with last year.
A spokesperson for the port of Portsmouth told The Loadstar empty EU-bound containers were …

Exporters getting to grips with post-Brexit processes, ‘but new pains loom’

The freight industry has disputed government claims that the UK has avoided the post-Brexit “worst case scenario” of supply chain breakdown and long queues to the port of Dover.
Reports emerged over the weekend that government believed the country had mitigated threats of major border chaos around ports, including Dover, with a Cabinet spokesperson suggesting latest data shows freight flows between the UK and EU were “back to normal.
“This has been possible thanks to the hard work put in by...

Fears that post-Brexit regime may lead to trailer shortage and higher rates?

Post-Brexit regulations are generating fears of trailer shortages and surging freight rates that could resemble those seen across ocean container supply chains.
Sources have told The Loadstar EU-based truck drivers are refusing to come to the UK unless there’s a back load, or the importer covers the cost of the empty return leg.
They are citing additional time and heightened bureaucracy, with concerns that as volumes pick up, so too will delays and rates.
“No …

Fears of ‘no-deal’ Brexit road and port congestion growing among hauliers

Hauliers are growing increasingly concerned by the confusion surrounding Brexit as the potential for a no-deal scenario intensifies.
A Department for Exiting the EU consultation paper reportedly says the onus should be on hauliers to travel with correct documentation, should Operation Brock come into force after a no-deal Brexit.
Operation Brock would see coastbound lanes of the M20 at junctions 8 and 9 reserved for HGV traffic and the middle lane kept clear …

Logistics set up for ‘a fall of catastrophic proportions’ in a no-deal Brexit

Panic is setting in among UK logistics operators as the country approaches its departure from the European Union.
With just 17 working days between now and the scheduled 29 March withdrawal, industry associations are expressing “deep concern” at the lack of preparedness.
The British International Freight Association (BIFA) has warned that logistics operators may find themselves liable for difficulties arising from a no-deal withdrawal.
It said: “Given the likelihood of customs clearance delays …

Truckers pour scorn on poorly-attended Manston post-Brexit traffic jam trial

Stress testing Manston Airfield’s ability to cater for truck congestion around Dover descended into farce today.
Less than half the number of expected lorries turned up – one a rubbish-collection truck.
Some 150 trucks were reportedly set to take part in the trial, however, that number plummeted to fewer than 80, with one source noting just 72 arrived.
“If another job turns up, that will take priority for drivers,” the source told The …
