Netradyne’s dashcam gets five-year federal waiver

Federal regulators have exempted Netradyne from safety rules to allow the fleet management software company to mount its dashcams lower on truck windshields.

Without the exemption, Netradyne said customers would not be able to install the cameras in an optimal location on the windshield to maximize their effectiveness.

“The Agency has determined that lower placement of the Driveri Dash Cam would not have an adverse impact on safety and that adherence to the terms and conditions of the exemption...

Bendix seeks FMCSA exemption for camera safety systems

Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems is asking federal regulators for flexibility in how its crash-avoidance cameras are mounted on windshields.

The request follows waivers recently approved by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) in the last two months for similar requests from J. J. Keller, Samsara and Nauto.

FMCSA regulations require vehicle safety devices such as those manufactured by Bendix in its exemption request to be mounted “not more than 4 inches below the upper edge of...

J. J. Keller gets federal waiver for dashcam

Federal regulators have granted J. J. Keller & Associates a five-year exemption that allows the company to mount its dashcam lower on a trucker’s windshield despite driver concerns of obstructed views.

In a decision scheduled to be published Tuesday, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) determined that the lower placement of the company’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) camera would not affect safety.

In fact, “the agency believes the use of the ADAS camera by fleets...

Feds waive regulations for Samsara’s AI Dash Cam

Samsara is getting a five-year waiver from federal regulations that it claims will allow its dashcam to provide optimal safety levels for drivers.

The industrial Internet of Things (IoT) company’s waiver is the second such exemption issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) within the last month. On Oct. 8 the FMCSA granted a five-year waiver to artificial intelligence (AI) startup Nauto for its windshield-mounted collision-avoidance sensor.

In Samsara’s case, FMCSA found...

Good day,

Industrial internet of things (IIoT) provider Samsara announced the introduction of driver efficiency scores to improve driver behavior and increase fleet safety. Fleets can monitor different driving parameters and use Samara’s fleet efficiency reports to train drivers and reduce fuel consumption, while increasing overall operational sustainability.

Samara’s report aggregates data across several criteria, including instances of truck idling, speeding, cruise control, coasting, and high...

Keys to dash cam acceptance are transparency and incentives

Transparency and incentives are key to gaining driver acceptance for dash cams (Photo: Jim Allen/FreightWaves)

Within the trucking industry, opinions on installing dash cams have oscillated between skepticism and conviction. On one end of the spectrum are drivers, who are resistant to dash cams, as some believe they infringe on their privacy. Fleet managers feel otherwise, because dash cams can help promote safer driving and provide immunity in courts.

“Change and uncertainty always cause stress. Drivers can sometimes assume the worst about any change. I think that goes not just for drivers, but for all...
