22 rescued after fire breaks out on bulker

Fire broke out on the bulker ‘MV Golden Ocean’, on November 10, while it was in ballast off Bontang, Indonesia. 22 crewmembers were on board the ship at the time of the incident, all of whom successfully evacuated the ship.

‘MV Golden Ocean’ issued an emergency call when the fire broke out, while it also asked search and rescue authorities to evacuate the crew.

Underwater search launched after Lion Air flight crash

A search operation is ongoing to find the bodies of the 189 passengers that were onboard the Lion Air flight JT 610, which crashed into the sea off Jakarta on October 29. An underwater search has also started, involving 30 divers.

The plane was flying from Jakarta to an Indonesian tin-mining region, when it lost contact with air traffic control, around 13 minutes after take off. According to flight data, the plane made a sudden, sharp dive into the sea. The cause of the crash is still unknown.

9 rescued from sinking vessel off Ewa Beach

The US Coast Guard responded to a report of a sinking charter-fishing vessel off Ewa Beach, on October 28. Three crewmembers were rescued, while six passengers were transferred to two other good Samaritan vessels.

Sector Honolulu watchstanders received a distress call over Channel 16 from the master of the 41-foot charter boat Wild Bunch reporting the vessel was taking on water. The RB-M crew launched immediately to assist.

Four men rescued from sinking vessel off Townsville

In the early hours of Sunday, 23 October, AMSA coordinated the rescue of four people from their sinking vessel about 90 kilometres north-east of Townsville. AMSA noted on the occasion that the fishermen had all the necessary safety equipment onboard, which eased the rescue operation.

The men were on a fishing trip when their vessel started taking on water and sinking. They activated their distress beacon at midnight on Saturday night and made a mayday call via radio.

Solo yachtsman rescued in the Indian Ocean

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) coordinated the search and rescue operation for a French yachtsman in the Indian Ocean, approximately 1300 kilometres south west of Perth, Western Australia.

On 21 October, around 12.45am, AMSA was notified of a dismasted yacht taking on water. The French yacht ‘Laaland’ was participating in the Golden Globe race. The yacht subsequently activated a distress beacon around 5.30am.

Cargo ship sinks off China, 11 missing

A cargo ship carrying sand sank off China’s Liaoning Province, local authorities informed on Sunday, October 21. As a result of the sinking, eleven people are missing.
