Congestion in Shanghai Port Remains Normal, Even as Much of the City Reimposes Lockdown

Shanghai Port

Shanghai only re-emerged last week from two months of lockdown, following a rise in Omicron cases in early April. Average waiting times for Tankers, Bulkers, and Containerships at the busy port peaked in late April at 65 hours, as shown in Figure 1. However, since then, waiting times have been steadily reverting to the levels experienced at the time of year over recent years. Despite 13 of the city’s 16 districts reimposing lockdown earlier this week, congestion is now back within normal levels.

Viewpoint: Shanghai’s reopening pledge nothing more than the boy who cried wolf

COVID workers in Shanghai.

Another week — and another pledge that the lockdown in Shanghai may be lifted. It’s not the first time this has been announced.

And it won’t be the last.

The city’s vice mayor, Wu Qing, said at a news conference Thursday that there would be an “orderly opening, limited [population] flow and differentiated management.” Yet, no date has been set.

How many times do these false alarms have to be stated? “Actions speak louder than words” applies to this situation. The government’s actions are not...

Viewpoint: Shanghai’s disruptive impact on the summer supply chain

Shanghai's zero-COVID lockdown continues.

The hairball snarling the flow of trade in Shanghai is growing.

Just as I warned on March 24, this lockdown will have a significant impact. The longer the delays, the greater the impact on U.S. inventories in the coming weeks. We have seen this horror show before and we all know the containers that are currently piling up will eventually make their way to the United States, creating massive congestion.

Besides technology products, furniture and auto parts, there are seasonal items in these...

Sharp Surge In Port Congestion Foreshadows Shanghai Lockdown

Authorities in Shanghai imposed a strict lockdown on Monday morning, following congestion at the city’s port skyrocketing since early March. With roads, bridges and tunnels between the Pudong and Puxi areas blocked for at least a week, Shanghai International Port Group, which manages the city’s ports, released a statement saying, other than in cases of extreme weather, 24 hour operations would be maintained.

Data from VesselsValue shows an almost five fold increase in the number of ships waiting...

Shanghai’s 2-stage COVID lockdown may make getting containers ‘almost impossible’

Logistics managers are warning clients the two-stage lockdown in Shanghai could be worse than the initial COVID lockdowns.

“These lockdowns are possibly more severe than the initial quarantines in 2020 when COVID was first discovered,” Jon Monroe of Monroe Consulting told American Shipper. “Many people will tell you the ports are open. And this is true. But the port workers, factory workers and truck drivers are locked in their homes.

“This will limit the capability of factories to deliver...

China’s lockdown will impact more than electronics from Yantian, Shanghai

The ports of Shanghai and Yantian are known as two of the largest electronics export hubs in the world, but if you look in the containers, you will find much more than that.

Using ImportGenius, American Shipper analyzed the bills of lading of Chinese exports leaving those ports bound for the United States since Feb. 1 to see what variety of items are manufactured and exported from those specific regions.

In addition to televisions and other electronic goods, the 5,958 containers processed...

Typhoon In-Fa slows air, ocean exports from China

Weather map of typhoon making landfall in China.

Typhoon In-Fa made landfall over the weekend in eastern China, with heavy rain, flooding and strong winds impacting freight exports in several major ports and airports.

Although In-Fa’swinds have slowed to 40 mph, up to 20 inches of rainfall threatens to put some assets at high risk with severe flooding, including Shanghai Pudong Airport and the ports of Ningbo, Shanghai, Changzhou and Nanjing, Everstream Analytics said in its daily weather forecast Monday. The company’s weather analysts expect...

Container movements normalising in China

The China Container Industry Association (CCIA) has said that the recovery of container movements in China is progressing rapidly.

In a survey report released on 18 March 2020, CCIA said that as of 10 March 2020, China’s container ports, barges, railways and multi-modal transport have resumed work, while the operating capacity of trucks and storage facilities is around 90% of pre-Covid-19 levels.

The Lunar New Year holidays were extended by one to two weeks from the end of January 2020, as China...
