Shipper anger at EC extension to shipping consortia block exemption regulation

Shippers have “slammed” the EC’s recent decision to renew the consortia block exemption regulation (CBER) for four years, claiming it ignored the views of exporters and importers.
The Global Shippers’ Forum (GSF) has also called for more “policing” of shipping line activities.
Noting “continued poor service levels”,  the GSF said there was a “seeming lack of competitive pressures”.
“Shippers are well used to similar pooling arrangements in the aviation sector, which allow code-sharing to be...

Alliances Becoming Obsolete As Carrier Vs Cargo Ratio Gets Imbalanced

According to an article published in Xeneta, with old-fashioned shipping terms such as ‘conference’ or ‘non-conference’ long consigned to a dustbin that contains full sets of paper Ocean Bills of Lading, one wonders if alliances are as helpful to carrier- shipper stability as proclaimed?

Shipping Alliance Role

Let’s start by asking: what is the role of a shipping alliance? In short, it’s to maximize profit and minimize risk in a manner that fairly supports both the carriers and the shippers....

Hapag-Lloyd ‘profit before market share’ strategy pays dividends

Hapag-Lloyd succeeded in putting “profits over market share” in its third quarter, according to container shipping analyst Lars Jensen.
The carrier posted a net profit of $168m in Q3, achieved from higher average freight rates on flat volume growth.
For the nine-month period, net profit was $333m, which compares with a surplus of just $15m for the same period of last year, and at ebitda level, the nine-month result came in 75% higher than …

As spot rates tumble, container carriers head cautiously toward the ‘peak season’

Despite withdrawing significant capacity, Asia-Europe ocean carriers appear to have failed to push up container spot rates as they head into the usually lucrative peak season.
The Shanghai Containerised Freight Index (SCFI) recorded another week of slippage for rates.
The North Europe component declined by a further 1.9%, to $688 per teu, and has now fallen more than 30% since the beginning of the year and around 20% below the level of a year ago.
And SCFI spot rates for …

HMM move will reshape the shipping alliance landscape again

The incorporation of South Korean carrier HMM into THE Alliance from April next year will see the alliance arena change once more.
According to Alphaliner, HMM’s participation in THE Alliance will add some 519,000 teu of capacity, boosting the vessel–sharing group’s global market share from 25% to 30%, almost matching the 2M and closing the gap on the Ocean Alliance’s just–shy–of-40% dominance.
The consultant said that although alliance members Hapag-Lloyd, ONE and Yang Ming were yet to...

‘An end to shipping alliances would see freight rates skyrocket’

Shipper opposition to deepsea liner shipping alliances may be dangerously misplaced, delegates at the TOC Container Supply Chain event in Rotterdam heard yesterday.
Lars Jensen, chief executive and partner of SeaIntelligence Consulting, said efforts by some to bar container lines from operating in alliances, claiming they have become anti-competitive, would result in freight rates “skyrocketing”.
The EU’s Block Exemption Regulation (BER), the de facto legislation covering liner alliances and...

From 15 to five in just a few years – shippers’ declining choice of container carriers

Shippers and forwarders that The Loadstar spoke to at Transport Logistic in Munich this week expressed concerns over the decreasing circle of carrier options open to them on tradelanes around the world.
A number were also confused over the bunker surcharge policy of container lines in respect to the IMO 2020 low-sulphur regulations.
A chief executive of a major global forwarders complained to The Loadstar that his carrier options were limited following …

The future of box shipping: less vessel cascading and fewer liner alliances?

Vessel cascading has been an ever-present feature of container shipping since liner executives first understood the benefits of economies of scale and began the box ship capacity arms race.
But over the next few years, there are likely to be only a few arenas where it will take place, according to Drewry Maritime Advisors’ director of ports, Neil Davidson.
Mr Davidson also suggested that, with an outstanding orderbook of some 130 vessels of …

US Shipping Act revision gives FMC power to watch shipping alliances with a sterner eye

US president Donald Trump this week handed the Federal Maritime Commission greater powers to regulate container shipping lines, following profound industry consolidation, through a revised US Shipping Act
The FMC Authorization Act of 2017 was signed into law by the president on Tuesday, “marking the first substantive revision to the US Shipping Act since 1998,” according to lawyers at Holland & Knight.
They said the move was primarily to address “antitrust issues related …
