  • Container and cargo ships make up the lion’s share of shipping emissions in Europe that reached a three-year high last year
  • But Transport & Environment green campaign group says LNG-carriers and cruise ships were the main driver of increased emissions in 2022
  • T&E says without stricter regulations, shipping firms will continue to spurn investment in efficiency and green fuels, moving the industry quickly to a point of no return

A recent news article published in the CNN states that shipping has sailed under the radar when it comes to climate action. That could all change this week.

Gigantic cargo ships

The cellphone in your hand; the shoes on your feet; the chair you’re sitting on – there’s a good chance these made their way to you on one of the giganticcargo ships that criss-cross the world’s oceans every day.

The shipping industry is a behemoth, transporting more than 80% of...

“Tougher than IMO” bill on ship emissions introduced in House

There have long been warnings that failure by IMO to act more aggressively on shipping decarbonization would lead more countries and regions to introduce their own measures. Already, the EU is moving to include shipping in its Emissions Trading System. Now, the discontent with IMO actions has reached the U.S. Congress in the form of a new Clean Shipping Act.

Congressman Alan Lowenthal (CA-47), who represents the Port of Long Beach, today introduced the Clean Shipping Act, legislation aimed at...

Solvang sees CCS and HFO as shipping’s greenest option

Norwegian ship operator Solvang ASA sees on-board carbon capture and storage (CCS) as potentially “the big game changer” in meeting shipping’s decarbonization goals.

Currently there is no working technology for shipboard CCS, and deep-sea transportation has no access to the amount of e-fuel necessary to replace conventional fuel oil, HFO/LSFO.

Solvang says it’s about to change that.

The company has spent 20 years optimizing engine operation, emission cleaning and exhaust recirculation to benchmark...

Report: Shipping emissions rose nearly 5% in 2021

A recent report said that shipping-related greenhouse gas emissions rose by nearly 5% in 2021.

Shipping-related greenhouse gas emissions rose by 4.9% in 2021 and were higher than in 2020 and 2019, according to Simpson Spence & Young’s annual industry report

Shipping emissions came in at 833 million metric tons of carbon in 2021, compared with 794 million metric tons in 2020 and 800 million metric tons in 2019.

This rise in emissions comes despite growing climate ambitions and efforts to reduce emissions in the maritime industry. Shippers are experimenting with alternative fuels and...

CSL completes world’s largest B100 biofuel tests on marine engines

Late last month, Montreal headquartered CSL Group, the largest owner and operator of self-unloading ships in the world, completed the world’s longest-running trials of B100 biodiesel on marine engines, accumulating nearly 30,000 running hours. Conducted on one half of CSL’s Canadian fleet, the tests resulted in a 23% total fleet life cycle reduction of CO2 as compared to marine gas oil (MGO).

During the trials, conducted in partnership with Canada Clean Fuels and with the collaboration of...
