Messy weekend wintry mix continues in Northern states

Truckers will hit more wet and slushy conditions this weekend from the Great Lakes to the Northeast.

Two cold fronts will produce periods of mixed precipitation — rain, snow, sleet and freezing rain — Friday and Saturday. Most travel impacts will be across Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio through Friday night and early Saturday morning, then from West Virginia to Maine the rest of Saturday. Gusty winds may lead to occasional blowing snow and reduced visibility.

Don’t skate past safety precautions on icy roads

It can happen in an instant — you’ve hit a patch of ice and lose control of your vehicle. As you instinctively press the brakes to no avail, the sudden loss of traction leaves you feeling helpless. Hopefully no one’s in your path as you careen down the highway.

Frigid weather can precipitate precarious situations like this on almost any road, as evidenced by last week’s ice storm that swept across the southern United States.

Freezing rain iced over highways across North Texas, spurring a series of

For the first time in about two weeks, no significant snowstorms or tropical systems are impacting travel across the continental U.S., and it should stay quiet for a while.

Truckers will hit areas of precipitation in several regions over the next few days, but it shouldn’t be anything they can’t handle.

Look for periods of light to moderate snowfall and rainfall in the Cascades, Rockies, Great Lakes and Northeast from Friday through next Tuesday. Sleet or freezing rain will be possible in a few...
