Skuld Guidance on Stowaways

The Immigration Authorities declare unwanted guests found on board the vessel, while the vessel is still in Port, as stowaways. Basically, it is the vessel’s responsibility to ensure that nobody enters the vessel illegally.

The ship owner will be liable for the full costs of repatriating the stowaway. It is essential therefore that the stowaway does not gain access onto the ship in any way.

Skuld recommend the following 10 measures to avoid stowaway problems:

  • The owner should try and employ three...

Why Concept for PORTS Needed?

The concept for PORTS was born following two serious maritime accidents in Tampa Bay, Florida. In May 1980, gale-force winds blew the freighter Summit Venture out of the Port of Tampa shipping channel. The ship struck the Sunshine Skyway Bridge sending a 1,200-foot span into the bay, along with six cars, a truck, and a Greyhound bus, killing 35 people. Earlier that same year, the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Blackthorn collided with an oil tanker in the shipping channel, causing 23 deaths.

Top 3 Reasons for A Drastic Decline in Oil Spills

It is important for Christian to make one thing clear in the beginning: as long as we need oil for heat and power, we will need to transport it. “And whenever you transport something, there is a risk of accident,” he says.

Christian Ingvorsen is a marine engineer who was educated in Maersk’s apprentice system in the 1980s. At the start of the 1990s, he worked for Roulunds, which manufactured containment boom systems for oil response and was eventually acquired by DESMI. He also helped write the “...

Top 3 Reasons Why EC Renewed BER

The EC renewed the BER, which allows container shipping lines to coordinate their networks and utilise space on their vessels, last April for a further four years, saying that the conditions allowing the anti-trust exemption “largely remained unchanged”.

It claimed the consortia agreement was justified, because “consortia generally bring rationalisation and economies of scale” which “help to improve the productivity and quality of available liner shipping services” while benefiting the users.

“In...

Why It’s World’s Strongest Box Or Super Box?

A standardized steel box specifically used to ship cargo internationally and locally and designed to fit on ships, trucks, rail and airplanes to easily go anywhere in the world. Because it must be bumped, banged, dropped, and stacked on by 5 or 8 other heavy shipping containers during transport, the ISO shipping container is the strongest mobile storage or housing structure in the world. Built with a heavy gauge corten steel frame and shell makes shipping containers easy to repair.

Certification for In-Water Inspections

Survey planning and review of hull drawings were completed the day prior to the survey.

During the inspection, the surveyor used VUVI’s sonar technology to scan the vessel’s bottom in order to locate the hull equipment, such as echo sounder sensors; speed log sensors and sea chests, while simultaneously assessing the general condition of the hull.

Statutory and class regulations require two bottom surveys of a vessel within a five-year period, with an interval of less than 36 months in between.

Project WASP on Dutch Cargo Ship

Boomsma Shipping has completed the installation of a first two eConowind’s VentiFoil wind-assisted propulsion units on its 6,477-dwt general cargo vessel Frisian Sea.

Tessa Remery, project coordinator at Boomsma Shipping, said: “With the help of the Wind Assisted Ship Propulsion (WASP) project, part of the EU Interreg North Sea region program, we will now test the performance during the coming two years. This innovative technology has to work in our daily operations with various wind conditions....

‘Impossible’ Recovery

Winter in the North Pacific is notorious for bringing extreme weather and heavy seas, and large container ships are traveling at maximum speeds, Clive Reed, founder of Reed Marine Maritime Casualty Management Consultancy, said in an interview. Problems with rolling and bad weather can be overcome by the shipmaster slowing down, he said.

“However, current freight rates are high, and there is commercial pressure on the ships to arrive on time and consequently make more voyages,” Reed said. “These...
