Workers reject politician’s ‘irresponsible’ call for trucker strike at Port Klang

A Malaysian politician has been slammed as “irresponsible” after calling for a truck driver strike at Port Klang, even as the major South-east Asian transhipment hub grapples with severe yard congestion.
Last week, assemblyman Azmizam Zaman Huri reportedly said truck drivers serving Port Klang could strike if the government didn’t upgrade roads leading into to the port.
But neither the truckers nor trucking associations have made such a claim, according to one …

A wave of SE Asia e-commerce traffic is moving towards the sea

Ocean freight is set to play a bigger role in south-east Asia’s booming cross-border e-commerce market.
According to regional e-commerce logistics specialist J&T Express, the Covid-crisis has accelerated online spending across the region, with the market on track to reach $153bn in sales by 2025.
This was the prediction before the pandemic hit and, furthermore, with the range of goods bought online widening, J&T predicts more volumes shifting to sea freight.

Surge in transhipment traffic pushes port of Tanjung Pelepas to a new record

Malaysia’s port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) saw 8% growth in 2020, to a record-breaking 9.8m teu, making it an outlier among South-east Asia’s competing transhipment hubs.
The growth the port, which is operated by Maersk subsidiary APM Terminals as the carrier’s key transhipment hub in the region, came despite global economic uncertainties and the Covid-crisis .
PTP CEO Marco Neelsen explained the reasons: “A surge in extra transhipment volumes, due to the …

Surging South-east Asian flows a boost for operators like DB Schenker

For DB Schenker, Vietnam has been a strong market over the past year.
One factor in this was the repercussions of the trade conflict between the US and China, which accelerated the migration of manufacturing from the middle kingdom to neighbouring countries, noted Robert Reiter, chief executive of the South-east Asia Cluster of the logistics provider.
Vietnam has been a major beneficiary of the exodus from China: in the first 10 months …

Treated like trash: South-east Asia vows to return rubbish from the west

It seems South-east Asia has had enough of all the rubbish. In this case, literally. The Guardian reports that over the past 12 months, western waste has been gathering along the shores of Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. In April a Malaysian government investigation revealed that waste from the UK, Australia, the US and Germany was pouring into the country illegally, falsely declared as ‘other imports’. Malaysia sent back five containers …

Brexit could also be a threat to 1.7m in Cambodia

Just when you thought you knew all the winners and losers of Brexit… here’s another one: Cambodia. A study conducted by the German Development Institute claims Cambodia will be among the losers. According to The Guardian, the South-east Asian nation has tariff-free access to the EU under the Everything But Arms agreement (EBA). The EBA provides this perk for the 49 nations defined as the least-developed. And the study’s authors …

China-US trade war providing a business bonus for South-east Asian exporters

Shippers serving the US import market may have already begun voting with their feet and moving production out of China in response to the looming threat of a full-blown trade war between the world’s largest two economies.
The 90-day abeyance period agreed by Donald Trump and Xi Jingping on the sidelines of the recent G20 meeting in Buenos Aires may be too late for some in the trade, as new research from …
