Rail shippers watching to see whether any benefits come from CP-KCS merger

Rail shippers are waiting to see whether the merger of Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern will actually enhance competition and provide them with more choices.

The Surface Transportation Board issued a decision Wednesday approving the deal, saying CP (NYSE: CP) and KCS would be able to promote competition better as a merged railroad company than as separate entities. The merged company, Canadian Pacific Kansas City or CPKC, is expected to start operating around April 14.

However, STB also...

Midwest soybean farmers to help pay for Pacific Northwest export terminal

Several U.S. soybean producer groups are planning to help fund the construction of a Pacific Northwest terminal that would be used to ship soybean meal exports.

The Iowa Soybean Association, the Kansas Soybean Commission, the Nebraska Soybean Board, the North Dakota Soybean Council, the South Dakota Soybean Research and Promotion Council and the Soy Transportation Coalition say will they collectively provide $900,000 toward pre-engineering, design and site development costs for AG Processing’s...

Rail stakeholders see promise and peril in Biden infrastructure push

A photograph of an open box car.

Freight rail stakeholders looked favorably upon the prioritization of freight rail within the transportation infrastructure provisions in President Joe Biden’s $2 trillion, 10-year American Jobs Plan. But some worry about its price tag and projects they view as unrelated to infrastructure.

“The OneRail Coalition applauds the Administration for prioritizing rail as part of President Biden’s infrastructure proposal, and for recognizing rail’s role as part of the solution to climate issues. Rail is...

Rail Roundup: Groups laud nominee Buttigieg; US rail traffic up

A photograph of a truck passing by a rail yard.

Freight rail stakeholders are offering early congratulations to former presidential candidate and South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg for his nomination to President-elect Joe Biden’s Cabinet.

Biden nominated Buttigieg to become secretary of transportation and lead the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).

The stakeholders offer support amid hopes that the White House and Congress will agree upon transportation initiatives — including a bipartisan infrastructure bill — that would find...

Containerized grain shippers feeling brunt of tight market

A photograph of a train hauling containers.

North American containerized grain shippers are feeling the effects of the tight container market and there’s no relief in sight.

“It’s very difficult to get containers to move grain,” said Greg Northey, vice president of corporate affairs for Pulse Canada. About 30% of what Canadian pulse producers export travels via containers.

Rates have gotten so high that it makes the whole supply chain uncompetitive, Northey said. Pulse producers can book a container, but they risk not having any...

Rail stakeholders: Tough road ahead for infrastructure bill

A photograph of tank cars parked at a rail yard.

The multibillion-dollar infrastructure bill passed the U.S. House of Representatives last week, but whether it can make it through the Republican-controlled Senate to President Donald Trump’s desk is less clear.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Moving Forward Act on a largely party-line vote of 233-188 last Wednesday, and the bill now is in the U.S. Senate.

The act includes an infrastructure component that authorizes the federal government to spend nearly $500 billion over five years...

Soybean industry offers $2 million to deepen Lower Miss

In an unusual partnership, U.S. soybean farmers are ponying up $2 million to help finance a joint state-federal initiative to deepen the Lower Mississippi River from Baton Rouge, La., to the Gulf of Mexico.

Considered a key corridor for soybean and corn exports, the area has been hit hard by spring floods and now faces a possible hurricane brewing in the Gulf.

Dredging the lower river from 45 feet to 50 feet in depth would permit access of larger ships and allow current vessels to be loaded with...

Soybean farmers eye containerized shipping on inland rivers

Inland container liner vessel. American Patriot Holdings LLC rendering

Soybean farmers, faced with many challenges in the global marketplace, are exploring containerized shipping on inland waterways as a viable way to get their products to export facilities near the Gulf of Mexico.

Farmers, represented by the Soy Transportation Coalition in Ankeny, Iowa, are especially interested in a vessel design developed by American Patriot Holdings LLC, Miami, that would allow the transport of shipping containers throughout the inland system.

APH has been testing two...
