0.10% Sulphur Emission Control Areas Enforced in South Korea

  • Korean classification society Korea Register releases a notice with regard to Emission Control Areas, which is in effect from September 1st, 2020.
  • The notice is on the Korean Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries’ first stage of 0.10% sulphur Emission Control Areas.
  • The regulation applies to ships anchored or moored, but from 1 January 2022.
  • The ships will be required to use fuels with no more than 0.10% sulphur when navigating in the designated ECAs.

Marshall Islands To Police IMO Infraction Case-by-Case

  • Marshallese registry has decided to consider infraction on a case-by-case basis, in line with guidance from the IMO, which has set a sulphur limit for marine fuels of 0.5pc globally from 1 January 2020.
  • Actions could include seizure of a vessel or requiring reapplication for various types of maritime certification.
  • The Marshall Islands will be viewing all scrubber fitments to 2015 standards, which were set by the IMO.
