A year ago, the coronavirus pandemic caused jobs to vanish from the energy sector as the demand for gasoline and fuel plummeted from travel restrictions and more people working from home.

But now the economy is picking up. The summer driving season spurred fuel demand, and airline seats are getting filled. With the typical high turnover and need for labor that goes with truck driving, the demand for tanker drivers and truckers to move equipment for oil and gas suppliers is greater than ever.

Volvo Trucks’ Mexico exit raises concerns for carriers

At Laredo, Texas-based carrier Super Transport International (STI), about 90% of the fleet of 500 vehicles are Volvo trucks.

Company founder Ernesto Gaytan Sr. said Volvo makes the “best truck out there.”

“Due to the security features that it has, the technology, the motor and the fuel economy and the comfort of the truck, it’s a very good truck,” Gaytan said.

Specialized heavy hauling offers big opportunity for Laredo company (with video)

Cross-border heavy-haul products keep getting bigger and bigger, said Ernesto Gaytan Jr., general manager of Laredo, Texas-based carrier Super Transport International (STI).

The revenue potential for companies willing to take on the bigger projects required to move the specialized freight (overweight/oversize) can also be much greater.
