Increased tariffs at NC Ports

Effective November 1, 2018 there will be a general rate increase of 5% to NC Ports’ Marine Terminal Operating Schedule (MTOS) #1.

China’s tariff cuts amid trade war

China on Wednesday (9/26/2018) unveiled plans to cut tariffs for products including machinery, electrical equipment and textile products beginning on November 1, as the country braces for an escalating trade war with the United States.

The cuts on over 1,500 industrial products are expected to lower costs for consumers and companies by about 60 billion yuan this year, the state cabinet said in a meeting chaired by Premier Li Keqiang, according to the state radio.

Import surge drives busiest August in Port of Oakland’s 91-year history

The Port of Oakland on Thursday reported the busiest August in its 91-year history, a record start to its peak season with imports up 9.2 percent from a year ago.

The Port, the third largest in California and among the nation’s top 10, attributed the gains to strong U.S. consumer spending.

Cargo down at Port of Long Beach due in part to new tariffs, officials say

From the Long Beach Post:

Container volumes at the Port of Long Beach were 1.9 percent lower in August compared to the same month the year before, according to the port’s latest figures.

Last month’s dip in volume can be attributed in part to the formation of new ocean-carrier alliances, in which carrier companies agree to certain conditions to stabilize the rates to ship goods.
