Integrated infrastructure delivery company AECOM has been awarded Phase Two of the Tema Port Expansion Project (TPEP) in Ghana, on behalf of Meridian Port Services (MPS), operator of the container terminal.

Phase One of Terminal Three was formally opened for shipping business on 28 June, following successful tests and simulation exercises of the project by MPS. An official ceremony was held during which a symbolic key was handed over to the MPS operations team.

The first commercial vessel, Maersk Cape Coast has docked at the Terminal 3 at Tema Port after 3 years of expansion and modernization works to complete the first two berths.

With the state-of-the-art technology and equipment, 1,427 containers were discharged and 730 containers loaded.

Konecranes wins Ghana lift trucks deal

The port service company in Ghana ordered a total of 11 lift trucks. Konecranes’ distributor in West Africa, Paterson Simons, brokered the deal.

Tema container terminal agreement’s renegotiation

The Maritime and Dockworkers’ Union (MDU) has called on the government to renegotiate the concession agreement with the Meridian Port Services (MPS) for the construction of the new container terminal at the Tema Port.

It said the concession agreement did not inure to the benefit of the country and would lead to a reduction of Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority’s (GPHA) container related businesses from $105 million to $30 million with a resultant loss of more than 1,400 jobs for the Authority.
