The Daily Dash: Driver safety, self-driving trucks, and bidding on dedicated freight

Speeding truck

The Daily Dash is a quick look at what is happening today in the freight ecosystem. In this edition, we find out that how a driver is trained matters more than his or her age, and we learn more about Navistar’s partnership with TuSimple and why they believe a production-ready self-driving truck will be on the nation’s highways by 2024. Plus, small fleets and owner-operators now have a way to bid on dedicated freight, and the rails are concerned about heavier and longer trucks becoming a reality.

Tesla Cybertruck factory a step closer to reality in Texas

Tesla’s proposed $1.1 billion Cybertruck factory received a 20-year incentives deal from Travis County, Texas, on Tuesday.

The approval of the economic incentives package helps Tesla clear a final governmental hurdle should it decide to build its new factory in Austin, Texas.

If Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) moves forward with the project in Austin, it will receive around $14 million in property tax breaks in exchange for promises to hire at least 5,000 workers in four years, ensure pay starts at $15 an...

Nikola Tesla biopic sees a world his namesakes seek to create

Etyhan Hawke as Nikola Tesla

Electric truck makers Nikola and Tesla make news almost daily as they seek to transform over-the-road transportation. A new biopic on the late 19th and early 20th-century inventor from which they take their names suggests Nikola Tesla saw the world they envision.

IFC Films expects to release “Tesla” on Aug. 21. The biopic premiered in January at the Sundance Film Festival.

Hollywood Reporter reviewer David Rooney says director Michael Almereyda created an “aptly livewire account of an unknowable...

Workhorse gets jolt for zero-emissions electric vans

Workhorse zero-emissions electric vans

Workhorse Group Inc. (NASDAQ: WKHS) can sell its zero-emission C-Series electric delivery vans in all 50 states after a California ruling buttressed a federal finding in the company’s favor.

Now, Workhorse just has to build the vans.

The Cincinnati-based manufacturer is building a couple of trucks a day at its Union City, Indiana plant. The goal is 300 to 400 vans this year. United Parcel Service (NYSE: UPS) and DHL have placed orders for about 1,100 vans.

The California Air Resources Board (CARB)...

The Daily Dash: Freight volumes remain strong as driver safety week starts

The Daily Dash is a quick look at what is happening today in the state of freight.

Freight volumes remain strong

There is little evidence that suggests freight volumes will not continue to remain strong past the fourth of July holiday peak. The outbound tender volume index (OTVI) has declined less after the holiday peak than it did last year falling more in line with freight volumes from 2018. Plus, capacity remains tight as tender rejections stay above 15%.

Tesla gets tax break for proposed $1 billion factory in Austin, Texas

With a key tax break from a local school district, Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) is one step closer to building an electric pickup truck plant in Austin, Texas.

The Del Valle School District just southeast of Austin has approved an incentive package for Tesla that would give the electric vehicle maker $46.4 million in property tax breaks over 10 years if it locates a proposed $1 billion factory on district land.

Tesla is also seeking approval from Travis County commissioners for additional tax...
