Loaded and Rolling: Trucking and CPG sales, White House freight data exchange

Truck drivers as a driver of CPG sales
(Photo: Jim Allen/FreightWaves)

I was recently  tasked with filling in as a temporary expert for The Stockout newsletter. It turns out that drivers are conveniently placed at truck stops that offer a litany of consumer packaged goods. Can you name one sector that has outperformed the S&P 500 by about 3,100 basis points (bps) year to date? It turns out the convenience store (C-store) industry is that sector. This sector for CPG is noted as a less...

White House: Cross-border truck delays hammering supply chains

The White House is pressuring Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to lift added inspections of commercial trucks entering from Mexico as supply chain disruption at the border threatens to spin out of control.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki warned in a statement Wednesday that cross-border delays caused by the inspections — which Abbott said last week he was putting in place at major crossings to curb illegal immigration — “are causing significant disruptions to the food and automobile supply chains,...

President Biden sets out to build bridges to re-connect ‘a new America’

In a speech in Minnesota  yesterday, President Biden acknowledged the support for his infrastructure bill across the political divide.
He said a new America was about to evolve, “fit to meet the competitive edge of the 21st century”.
The president explained this would require: “Training as construction managers to oversee all phases of construction projects we’re going to be seeing all across Minnesota, like the Twin Port Interchange and Ports Interchange in …

White House starts publishing supply chain dashboard

With the U.S. economy relying heavily on clearing out freight bottlenecks up and down the supply chain, the White House on Wednesday started a twice-monthly dashboard featuring key performance indicators to measure progress.

Metrics used in the dashboard, compiled by the Biden administration’s Supply Chain Disruptions Task Force, include ships at anchor at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, cumulative container import volume and retail inventories.

The White House said it plans to publish...

Walmart boosting off-peak container processing in LA by up to 50%

Big-box retailers including Walmart, along with FedEx and UPS, have detailed plans to expand container operations at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach as part of the Biden administration’s efforts to unclog a massive bottleneck at the country’s largest container terminal complex.

The details come ahead of a virtual meeting President Joe Biden is holding with port leadership and dock labor on Wednesday to discuss transportation challenges throughout the supply chain.

“Unlike leading ports...

White House charts a course for drug supply chain

(Photo: Polina Tankilevitch)

This is an excerpt from Medically Necessary, a health care supply chain newsletterSubscribe here.

The report: The White House released a report last week that examined vulnerabilities in the pharmaceutical supply chain and offered recommendations to fix those problems.

The report largely focused on the ongoing problem of drug shortages, especially for cheap generic medicines. The number of new shortages of drugs peaked at about 250 in 2011. That number has fallen sharply since then, but ongoing...

White House cuts size of infrastructure package by almost 25%

The White House sliced nearly 25% off its $2.25 trillion, 10-year infrastructure package, bargaining down to $1.7 trillion in an effort to negotiate with Senate Republicans who offered their own $568 billion, five-year package in April.

“In our view this is the art of seeking common ground,” said White House spokesperson Jen Psaki during a press conference on Friday. “This proposal seeks a willingness to come down in size, giving in on some areas that are important to the president while also...
