Off a small base, Uber Freight profits more than double in Q2

The small profits that digital brokerage Uber Freight turned in during the first quarter of the year more than doubled in the second three months of 2022.

It’s off a small base: Uber Freight had earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization of $2 million in the first quarter, the first time it had been profitable on that basis, and had EBITDA of $5 million in the second quarter, the company said in its second-quarter earnings statement.

Soaring fuel prices leave owner-operators with tough choices

Avery Vise, vice president, trucking for transport consultancy FTR, has some advice for owner-operators struggling with a massive spike in diesel fuel prices and plunging spot market rates: “There are good reasons to sell your truck and become a company driver,” Vise said.

Under the circumstances, it wouldn’t be surprising if some of the 350,000 registered owner-operator drivers seek the protection of company driving, or lease their independent services to a fleet, something that 44% of driver...

Uber Freight recorded positive earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization in the first quarter of 2022.
