The light load: Confessions of a transportation tenderfoot

Change is good: Judge Judy was better than Judge Wapner, and Taylor Swift is a marginal improvement on the Archies.

Change is bad: Spitting snow becomes a blizzard, leaving you with 16 inches of visibility on I-29 somewhere between the Siouxs — Falls and City — praying that that borrowed Ciera contains the mandatory — MANDATORY! — winter stash of Hershey bars.

It did not.

Not that I’m Folgers-grade bitter about that and not that I needed the chocolate to survive. I had fat stores to last for weeks...

Employee productivity suffers as e-commerce technology integration issues persist

Not surprisingly, the boom in e-commerce has driven more transportation and logistics (T&L) companies to invest in technology. With everything from warehouse automation to visibility tools, these firms are racing to meet demands of shippers and consumers.

This was the first reading in four months to register below 70%, but still well ahead of the historic average of 62.3% and the year-ago reading of 54%.

The LMI is a diffusion index wherein a reading above...

Bankers: COVID brought more buyers to market for e-commerce tech

Higher valuations driven by supply-demand imbalance

One thing that the pandemic has made clear is that large retailers — not just other third-party logistics and transportation providers — will be prolific acquirers of e-commerce fulfillment platforms.

COVID-19 has had a complex and multifaceted impact on the capital markets for transportation and logistics technology companies. Social distancing, corporate bans on travel, and choppy performance during the pandemic made it difficult for many...

Transportation capacity tightens further, pricing climbs higher

November LMI shows transportation capacity is 'contracting at an increasing rate'

The November Logistics Managers’ Index (LMI) report shows transportation prices are “increasing at an increasing rate” with capacity “contracting at an increasing rate.”

The supply chain survey of leading logistics executives shows the industry continued to grow at a rapid pace in the month, registering a 70.8% reading, down only 0.8 points sequentially. The overall index sits nearly 20 points higher than the all-time low logged in April, the height of the pandemic-related lockdowns, and is tied...
