Lack of drivers hamstringing supply chain recovery

The trucking industry is desperate to get drivers into seats at a time when the supply chain needs them most, but a variety of factors is stalling the industry’s ability to gain traction.

Chief among those factors is the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse. Since January 2020 when the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration began recording substance abuse violations in the clearinghouse database, over 91,000 drivers have been taken off the road for testing positive or refusing to take a test....

Federal panel recommends military drivers help clear ports

A federal advisory committee is recommending that the Biden administration work out a plan to give voluntary and paid truck driving jobs to active military, veterans and National Guardsmen to clear cargo containers from congested ports.

The recommendation, part of several made earlier this week by the Advisory Committee on Supply Chain Competitiveness (ACSCC) to address the ongoing freight supply chain crisis, adds to growing pressure on federal agencies to take more decisive action.

ACSCC, a...

Supply chain logjams hobbling smaller shippers

Recent commitments to move to 24/7 operations by transportation and shipping giants FedEx, UPS, Walmart, Home Depot and others are receiving a lot of support by the Biden administration but some smaller businesses feel left out.

“Having UPS and FedEx ramp up their delivery process doesn’t do a lot for the challenges we have with lumber and labor shortages that are handicapping our industry and creating a shortage of new houses,” home builder John Fowke, testifying on behalf of the National...

Biden vaccine mandate may worsen low driver retention rates

An emergency rule being developed by the U.S. Department of Labor mandating vaccines or weekly testing for workers at companies with 100 or more employees is likely to exacerbate the already low driver retention rates in the trucking industry.

“Some of the biggest companies are already requiring this — United Airlines, Disney, Tyson Foods and even Fox News,” said President Joe Biden in announcing the new requirement at the White House late Thursday. “The bottom line: We’re going to protect...

What does Walmart’s GoLocal service mean for last-mile delivery?

Walmart rolls out new last mile delivery offering GoLocal for SMBs

They say every company is now a technology company. That modern adage of the business world has proved profitable for its followers as e-commerce has swept the globe over the past few years. But that increased order volume has contributed to the sister trend of supply chain backups, a contemporary reality that is coining a new business proverb: Every company is now a logistics company.

It’s a prediction that FreightWaves CEO Craig Fuller made over a year ago, and it’s coming true. Simply put,...

Werner: Exemption will get drivers employed faster amid ‘historic driver shortage’

Werner Enterprises is banking on a commercial learner’s permit (CPL) exemption not only to boost operational productivity but to help the company get its drivers employed faster.

In an application filed with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration in July, the Omaha, Nebraska-based truckload carrier asserted current federal regulations are keeping it from immediately employing new drivers because drivers are no longer issued a temporary CDL after passing the CDL skills test.

Temporary...

Federal panel urges Biden administration to attack driver shortage

Supply chain experts advising the Biden administration want the U.S. Department of Commerce to lead a multiagency effort to address a truck driver shortage they warn has “likely reached an all-time high.”

The International Trade Administration’s Advisory Committee on Supply Chain Competitiveness (ACSCC), a 45-member panel of industry officials that advises the secretary of commerce on national freight policy, voted at an ad hoc meeting on Wednesday to recommend that the department “take a...

Prolonged uptick in truck and trailer orders ‘cause for concern’

Reliance Partners CFO Thom Albrecht warns that the bullish parts of freight cycles for carriers are getting shorter in duration on the upside and nastier and longer on the downside. He notes that a shift could be abrupt and felt significantly by carriers when a lot of new equipment is delivered to the market.

Such deliveries may occur at a time when consumers resume spending on services as opposed to heavy spending on goods, up 7% in recent months compared to an almost 7% drop in services...

The trucking industry has been in a strange situation for some time now. The market for the movement of overland freight is estimated in the United States to be worth over $1.1 trillion in 2020. The American Trucking Associations (ATA) estimates the freight volume is expected to grow by 2.3% between 2024 and 2028 and is predicting revenue growth of 36.6% over the next...
