FMCSA data shows rise in crash rates among new-entrant carriers

WASHINGTON — Preliminary data compiled by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration reveals a steady rise in crashes involving large trucks among companies that entered the industry since 2018.

The data was presented by FMCSA statistician Dan Burrill during the agency’s annual Analysis, Research, and Technology Forum on Wednesday.

The data was presented as a supplement to an analysis of the surge in new common-carrier registrations since just before and during the pandemic. In 2021, for...

NHTSA truck brake rule under review at OMB

WASHINGTON — The White House is reviewing a proposed rule to establish a safety standard to require and/or standardize the performance of automatic emergency braking systems (AEB) on heavy trucks.

According to a “statement of need” received by the Office of Management and Budget on Tuesday, the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration believes there is potential for AEB “to improve safety by reducing the likelihood of rear-end crashes involving heavy vehicles and the severity of crashes,”...

New trucking trade group has 1 focus: DOL’s independent contractor rule

There’s a new trucking-focused trade group in Washington and it is interested in one issue: independent contractor status.

The owner of a Rhode Island-based trucking company pleaded guilty in federal court on Monday to conspiring to illegally alter or bypass truck emission controls.

The conspiracy, which took place from roughly September 2014 through August 2019, involved Michael Collins, his North Kingstown company, M&D Transportation Inc., and his now-defunct computer company, Diesel Tune-Ups of RI Inc.

Also involved in the scheme were various trucking and diesel vehicle sales and repair companies throughout the...

California gets EPA waiver to move ahead with Advanced Clean Trucks rule

California’s Advanced Clean Trucks (ACT) rule, which goes hand in hand with its Advanced Clean Fleets (ACF) rule as part of a push to lower emissions from the state’s trucking sector, has been granted an expected waiver from the Environmental Protection Agency.

The ACT was already further along the approval process than the ACF. ACT mandates numbers of zero-emission vehicles that OEMs must sell into the state as a percentage of their total fleet. ACF sets rules that mandate the percentage of...

Lawmakers introduce ‘clear path’ to more truck parking

WASHINGTON — The latest push to expand parking for truck drivers is a synchronized effort by lawmakers in both houses of Congress.

The Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act, introduced in the House and Senate on Wednesday, authorizes $755 million over four years through a competitive grant program. The money would be dedicated to increasing and improving safe parking for truckers, primarily through new facilities or by converting existing weigh stations and rest areas.

A similar bill introduced in...

California expected to accelerate deadline for zero-emissions trucks

The California Air Resources Board has thrown open the door on comments to its proposed Advanced Clean Fleet (ACF) rule, which sees a phaseout of diesel-powered trucks in the state, even as CARB still does not have the waiver it needs to make it a reality.

That proposal includes an acceleration of the target for requiring zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) in the state’s trucking sector to 2036. That date had been 2040.

The comment portal is here. Comments can be submitted until April 7.

The move up to...
