Volumes show signs of life, now 8% below year ago levels

There is life in the outbound tender volume index (OTVI) once again. After two weeks of walking along the x-axis, OTVI has turned to the upside. Volumes have risen just over 4% since last week and have broken the 9,000 mark.

Cushman to step down as CEO at P.A.M. Transportation

P.A.M. rig on highway

P.A.M. Transportation Services (NASDAQ: PTSI) announced that President and CEO Dan Cushman will retire after 11 years at the helm. He will remain with the company in an “advisory role” until July 31.

Cushman’s retirement is effective May 1.

The Tontitown, Arkansas-based truckload (TL) carrier plans to begin an “internal and external national search” to fill the vacancy.

Trimble tackles work zone safety with reduced speed alerts

Work zone safety

More than 18,000 work zone crashes a year involve tractor-trailer trucks. Many times, the reason is the sudden nature of slowing traffic as the trucks approach a work zone, leaving the truck drivers without enough room to safely slow or stop their vehicles. According to data from the National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse, there were 672 fatal crashes in work zones in 2018, with 203 of them involving a truck.

Hub Group’s volume declines accelerate in April

On its first quarter 2020 earnings call, intermodal marketing company Hub Group’s (NASDAQ: HUBG) management team said that they expect second quarter volumes to deteriorate further. April revenue is down 15% to 18% year-over-year company-wide, accelerating from the 10% decline reported during the first quarter.
