Biden administration revising rule on independent contractors

Driver with truck at service station

The Biden administration has unveiled a proposed rule that could raise costs for trucking companies and gig transportation, such as Uber and Lyft, that rely on independent contractors.

The 184-page proposed rule, revealed by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division (WHD) on Tuesday, reinstates guidance similar to that used under the Obama administration that is considered less favorable to classifying workers as independent contractors.

“Through our enforcement in the wage and hour...

Tomorrow is the 153rd anniversary of the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in the United States. It is not an overstatement that the transcontinental railroad changed transportation in this nation completely.

The Central Pacific Railroad (CPRR) began construction of the transcontinental railroad on January 8, 1863, and built east from California’s capital of Sacramento. Concurrently, the Union Pacific Railroad (UP) began construction westward from Council Bluffs, Iowa (near...

Buttigieg defends administration efforts to ease inflation

Pete Buttigieg testifying in the Senate.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Tuesday deflected attempts to blame the Biden administration for soaring inflation while acknowledging that supply chain turmoil and high gas prices are major factors contributing to the problem.

Testifying at a Senate Commerce Committee hearing to defend the Department of Transportation’s $142 billion 2023 budget — a 60% increase over the Trump administration’s last DOT budget request — Buttigieg said his department is taking responsibility for “doing...

Trucking company explains why it started a driver apprenticeship program after Biden’s challenge

A red cab white trailer Karl's Transport truck.

In December, the Biden administration challenged trucking companies to step up their driver training efforts and create a registered apprenticeship program with the U.S. Department of Labor, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The administration considered its 90-Day Trucking Apprenticeship Challenge,  which was aimed at recruiting and retaining more drivers, a success. It resulted in 102 new apprenticeship programs, beating the administration’s goal of 90 programs in 90...

Feds reject industry advice for under-21 truck driver program

Federal regulators have rejected certain recommendations from trucking and safety groups on its CDL pilot program for those ages 18-21 as regulators work to keep the project on track before a White House approval deadline.

In a notice scheduled to be published on Monday, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration stated it is turning down advice from the American Trucking Associations and others that the agency do away with a requirement that carriers participating in FMCSA’s Safe Driver...

White House highlights new trucking jobs amid looming downturn

The Biden administration emphasized progress on several recent initiatives aimed at getting more people into trucking jobs but the potential for a freight recession threatens to undermine some of that progress, at least in the short term.

A fact sheet released by the White House on Monday pointed to major changes in the trucking industry over the past year, including record job numbers.

“Since President Biden took office, we have seen historic increases in trucking employment with 2021...

Buttigieg prioritizing truck driver pay

If anything positive has come out of the supply chain crisis, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg wants truckers to know it is a renewed appreciation for them — and that they should be compensated accordingly.

“Industry estimates that there’s a gap of about 80,000 truck drivers right now relative to what we need,” Buttigieg said in a keynote address Wednesday at the Transportation Research Board (TRB) annual meeting in Washington, citing data from the American Trucking Associations.

“But...
