Nikola founder loses bid for a new trial

Nikola Corp. founder Trevor Milton lost his bid for a new trial when the judge in his case rejected a defense claim that a juror hid a bias against rich people.

Milton’s personal fortune approached $10 billion during the high-flying days of the electric truck maker’s stock following its public debut in 2020. He has cashed out hundreds of millions of his holdings. But he still owns more than 5% of the company he founded in 2015.

Milton’s defense team argued in December that the juror’s comments...

Prosecutor labels Trevor Milton a ‘con man’ in closing argument

Trevor Milton and defense attorney Marc Mukasey

Prosecutors took their final strokes Thursday at painting Nikola founder Trevor Milton as a greedy “con man” who repeatedly lied to pump up the electric truck maker’s stock price.

The defense accused Nikola executives of enabling Milton’s obsession with luring retail investors via social media and podcast interviews.

The jury of nine men and three women will begin deliberating in Manhattan, New York, on Friday. U.S. District Judge Edgardo Ramos’s instructions loom large in how they evaluate the...

Prosecution rests in Nikola founder Trevor Milton’s fraud trial

Milton leaves courty

The prosecution in Trevor Milton’s federal fraud trial rested Friday after three weeks of calling witnesses who painted the Nikola Corp. founder as a prevaricator obsessed with the startup’s stock price.

Milton, 40, faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted on the most serious of four securities and wire fraud charges. His defense attorneys claim Milton believed what he was saying and never intended to mislead anyone.

The defense expects to present its case Monday and rest on Tuesday. The jury...

Milton faces a maximum of 25 years in prison if convicted of the most serious of four federal fraud charges. The government claims Milton defrauded investors by lying about the company’s technology accomplishments and the promise of future products to inflate the stock price.

Nikola founder’s federal fraud trial delayed to Sept. 12

Trevor Milton gestures during presentation

Nikola founder Trevor Milton’s federal fraud trial will now begin Sept. 12 after his attorneys persuaded a federal judge to delay the case following the addition of a new charge last week.

Federal prosecutors argued for a one-week delay from the trial scheduled to begin July 18. Milton’s attorney asked for 30 days. Empaneling a jury in August is difficult due to back-to-school demands for potential jurors and scheduled vacations, U.S. District Court Judge Edgardo Ramos said.

That led Milton’s...
