In late 2017, when Uber announced “Freight,” I was about to build a digital freight brokerage, one with a very different focus but in the same pool. In the 2.5 years since, I have had a front row seat for the impact – first selling against them, and now helping companies with their digital transformations.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime event that has been...

Uber Freight’s bookings climb, but an earnings benchmark slides

Uber Freight’s gross bookings rose 55% in the first quarter, but its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, already negative last year, sank even further.

EBITDA for the Freight segment came in at negative $64 million, down from negative $29 million last year. In an earnings statement that offered few details or comments on the segment, Uber Technologies, the parent corporation, did note that during the quarter, more than 10,000 “relief loads of critical goods … booked...

Pricing transparency eases marketplace friction, says Uber Freight’s Bill Driegert

Every second counts in the freight industry, especially during a pandemic, said Bill Driegert, Uber Freight co-founder and head of operations.

Driegert said when freight volumes were spiking in late March because consumers were hoarding supermarket staples, Uber Freight was able to help a shipper set up an application programming interface (API).

“As the market was surging, we had one enterprise shipper who reached out to get an API set up; we were able to get the shipper set up in four hours,...

Virtual trucking carrier CloudTrucks has teamed up with Uber Freight and COOP by Ryder to help qualifying Uber rideshare drivers break into the freight industry.

The partnership, launched three weeks ago, comes as the COVID-19 pandemic has decimated Uber’s rideshare business, putting thousands of drivers out of work. The coronavirus lockdowns have also led to a surge in demand for essential items like food and medical supplies.

Stefanie Roose and Barbara Wilbrink, of Dutch legal firm AKD, believe the rising number of online platforms has stirred questions around what they actually do.
“It is relevant to consider the legal position of such platforms and establish whether they act as freight forwarders or carriers,” they said.
