US container imports rise in line with pre-COVID peak season pattern

chart of imports

Container shipping spot rates in the trans-Pacific trade started to rise in late June and remain near their highs for 2023. The question is: How much of this rate gain is driven by peak season demand, and how much by shipping lines intentionally constraining capacity?

U.S. import numbers confirm that at least some of this rate gain is demand-driven.

On Monday, Descartes reported that U.S. ports imported 2,196,268 twenty-foot equivalent units in August, up 0.4% from July and 5.5% from June. This...

Shipping profits stay ‘super strong’ as supply chain congestion mounts

photo of a Maersk container ship

The container shipping boom refuses to end on its predicted schedule. Maersk previously guided for a sharp slowdown starting in July. That didn’t happen. Now it sees a gradual pullback toward the end of the year.

On Tuesday, the world’s second-largest container liner operator pre-reported an all-time high $10.3 billion in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization for Q2 2022. During a conference call on Wednesday, Maersk CEO Soren Skou said that Q3 2022 will be “equally...

New York nudges biggest US container port title as west coast imports flatline

Having already outstripped Long Beach as a bigger US import container hub, the port of New York & New Jersey is close to usurping Los Angeles at the top of the rankings.
The reason is the accelerating coastal shift of imports from west to east.
According to the latest data compiled by Blue Alpha Capital,  NY&NJ saw imports jump 15% year on year in December, to 411,924 teu, while at Los Angeles …

March US rail volumes up 14% amid uneven year-over-year comparisons

A photograph of a Union Pacific locomotive parked in a rail yard.

U.S. rail volumes in March rose double digits percentage-wise, although some of the year-over-year gains may reflect uneven comparisons because of last year’s pandemic-induced volume downturn.

U.S. freight railroads originated nearly 2.59 million carload and intermodal units in March, up 14.2% from March 2020, according to the Association of American Railroads.

Of that total, U.S. intermodal traffic jumped 24% to 1.43 million containers and trailers. Meanwhile, U.S. carloads rose 4.1% to nearly...

Pain for US importers appears far from over as seasonal stock pours in

Retailers are concerned about delays to their holiday merchandise, as robust import volumes are straining the US west coast gateways.
In particular, they claim, the port complex of Los Angeles and Long Beach is already struggling with lengthening transit times.
According to the Port Tracker report, published monthly by the National Retail Federation (NRF) and Hackett Associates, US container ports handled 2.1m teu of imports in August, up 9.7% month on month, …
