FMCSA moves to ensure capacity in wake of COVID-19 variants

Federal regulators have extended an exemption from hours-of-service rules for drivers hauling pandemic-related freight, citing the need to provide capacity in the wake of a potential rise in COVID-19 infections.

“Although the number of COVID-19 cases began to decline in the U.S. following widespread introduction of vaccinations, persistent issues arising out of COVID-19 continue to affect the U.S., including impacts on supply chains and the need to ensure capacity to respond to variants and...

Visibility lacking in high-stakes pharmaceutical sector

Red truck drives on highway in mountainous region

Moving pharmaceuticals has always been a high-stakes job teeming with threats to bottom lines and, more importantly, human lives. The headwinds that pharma companies — as well as doctors and patients themselves — face were highlighted in 2020, as the logistics industry was saddled with the complex task of sourcing and delivering highly sensitive COVID-19 vaccine doses.

Research from Statista revealed that approximately $1.27 trillion was spent on medicines alone in the U.S. during 2020. With...

Live organ transplants: Shipment visibility is a matter of life and death

Real-time visibility solutions are becoming more critical. All shippers — and end consumers — want to know where (and how) their products are. Still, visibility remains far more important for some loads than others. Most compromised shipments result in lost time and money. Some result in lost lives.

Time-critical shipments cannot be delayed or compromised without serious consequences. If a mattress is delayed, it is inconvenient. If a live heart is delayed, a patient awaiting transplant could...

Coronavirus vaccine distribution one of greatest logistics challenges ever seen

After over a year of pandemic-related restrictions across the globe, the coronavirus vaccine is top of mind for just about everyone. This is especially true for the people working tirelessly to transport vaccine doses safely from the manufacturers to the end consumers.

“The vaccine distribution is going to go down as one of the greatest logistics operations ever seen. It is potentially the largest operation since World War II,” said Jim Monkmeyer, president, Transportation, DHL Supply Chain...

Airport cargo communities collaborate to optimize vaccine transport

Airports should use their influence as regional economic engines to organize logistics companies, pharmaceutical manufacturers and regulators into close-knit cargo communities that collectively plan COVID-19 vaccine transport to prevent delays or product damage, according to a new report.

With so many handoffs — factory, freight forwarder, shuttle trucker, airline warehouse, aircraft, customs clearance — and extra security precautions, the opportunity for breakdowns is high without a team...

Russia ships Sputnik vaccine to Argentina on passenger jet

A blue-and-white jet comes in for landing with wheels down.

Sixty-three years after the Soviet Union took an early lead in the space race by launching Sputnik, the first Earth-orbiting satellite, Russia is in the middle of  the COVID-19 vaccine race.

Last week, passenger carrier Aerolíneas Argentinas transported the first batch of 300,000 Sputnik V doses from Moscow to Buenos Aires on a cargo-only flight. The “V” stands for vaccine.

The Airbus A330-200 carried nine insulated containers with 59 cases of the two-dose vaccine, a representative for...
