Pandemic effects force lines to continuous schedule adjustments

In terms of blanked sailings and capacity management, there are no signs of recovery going forward into the third quarter, according to a Braemar container trade and shipping analyst, as the peak season demand is likely to be subdued.

“A controlled and phased blanked sailing strategy will continue and when demand recovers, a phased and controlled re-introduction of tonnage is likely to happen. Liner companies will aim to maintain rates rather than increase them significantly,” the Braemar...

Erratic rate discipline undermined the lines in 2011, can they hold their nerve in 2020?

A senior analyst believes that the crucial test for the carriers will come when the battle against the Covid-19 virus has turned in the society’s favour and the lines can see a significant rebound in demand.

Up to now the lines have managed to maintain their rate discipline with lines acting to maintain utilisation levels and to cut their costs by idling capacity, either through installing scrubber technology, using vessels on extended routes, round the horn of Africa rather than through Suez,...

Rate levels not costs key to mitigating carrier 2020 losses

Maintaining freight rate levels is key to maintaining carrier profits in this crisis hit year that has seen shipping lines slash services, managing capacity in a, so far, successful effort to keep rates at a profitable level.

Carriers have maintained the rates while the volumes have decreased substantially, but with the crisis alleviating a little the third quarter volumes are expected to recover a little as the effects of the global pandemic are mitigated, that will mean lines will bring some...
