Steve Nevey chosen as new head of Washington State Ferries

Washington State Secretary of Transportation Roger Millar has announced that Steve Nevey will serve as assistant secretary for the Washington State Ferries Division, succeeding Patty Rubstello, who is stepping down as head of WSF to spend more time with family after more than 33 years of service with the Washington State Department of Transportation. Rubstello will remain assistant secretary to ensure a smooth transition until Nevey begins his new role on March 16.

Washington State Ferries ridership up again in 2023

In what could be a hopeful sign for ferry operators across the U.S., over 1.3 million more riders boarded Washington State Ferries (WSF) in 2023 than in 2022. The 7.4% spike from 2022 pushed annual ridership at America’s largest ferry system to nearly 18.7 million last year.

WSF to issue new RFP for hybrid-electric ferries

Washington State Ferries (WSF) is to rebid the contract to build its new series of hybrid-electric Olympic class (HEOC) vessels.

WSF has nearly completed the functional design for the vessels, which are a key element of its electrification project, through a contract with shipbuilder Vigor. Once completed and accepted, WSDOT will own the design and will utilize it for these new vessels, which will each have a capacity for 144 vessels.

Maintenance error led to $3.8 million Washington State Ferry engine failure

Insufficient tightening of a bolt during an engine overhaul on the Washington State Ferry Wenatchee led to a catastrophic engine failure with expensive consequences, according to a National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) report.
